Walsall 1 Portsmouth 0

Walsall deservedly beat Portsmouth 1-0 today at Bescot to keep alive just their hopes of avoiding relegation. Pedro Matias grabbed the winner on 13 minutes after Dean Keates’ shot was only parried by Russell Hoult.

The result means a nail-biting final day of the season next Sunday.

To stay up, Walsall need to get a better result away to promotion-chasing Ipswich than West Brom can manage at home to champions Charlton. If Walsall manage to pull off a win in their biggest match for 17 years, then they could survive even if West Brom win as long as Crewe do not win away at Barnsley.

Here’s the table – one more fantasy scenario for you – if Walsall were to draw 4-4 with Ipswich, with the Baggies drawing 0-0 with Charlton, the Saddlers would stay up on goals scored!

Crewe 45 9 5 9 27 31 4 4 14 17 36 48 -23
West Brom 45 5 11 6 23 26 4 8 11 18 34 46 -19
Walsall 45 7 6 10 26 34 4 7 11 26 41 46 -23
