Walsall 3 Brentford 2

roger6 @ 10:46 am Wednesday 18 April 2001

Another superb display by Portuguese star Jorge Leitao inspired the Saddlers to a 3-2 win over Brentford last night to leave Sir Ray’s men needing one more win to virtually ensure play-off participation.

Don Goodman had a hand in all three goals, although he didn’t manage to get on the scoresheet himself. Walsall raced into a two goal lead following first half efforts from Leitao, and a Tom Bennett screamer. Brentford battled back to equalise 10 minutes into the second half, only for Jorge to seal it with a piercing drive into the far corner.

After the match Sir Ray paid tribute to the contribution of Fitzroy Simpson – and spoke of getting the players ready for the play-off challenge.

Walker denies Stoke

A superb first half penalty save kept the Saddlers in the play-off shake up, and left Sir Ray’s men needing a maximum of 9 points from their last six games to be certain of figuring in the end-of-season showpiece.

And it could be Stoke we face – though there is an argument for trying to make sixth spot our own, as then we will face Rotherham – our best hope I think of making the Cardiff final.

Attention turns now to our home game with Brentford on Tuesday night – before Graydon’s army tackle their last five league fixtures – 4 of them aways from fortress Bescot.
