Summer Signings

roger6 @ 12:10 am Thursday 11 July 2002

A round-up of activity and news from Bescot over recent weeks, including new signing pictured left, Aussie striker David Zdrilic.
Bescot arrivals
Steve Corica – Aussie midfielder/striker who did so much to keep Walsall in the first division last season after arriving on loan from Japan.
Danny Hay – 27-year-old originally bought by the recently departed Leeds boss David O’Leary in 1999, suffered injury troubles but now apparently given the all-clear. 6 foot 3 central defender.
David Zdrilic – Australian international striker who has scored 18 goals in 22 games (admittedly eight of these were against American Samoa!).
Dani Rodrigues – released by Southampton in the close season after a bad spell of injuries. An attacker who likes playing on the right, impressed during loan spells at Bristol City, but rarely off the treatment table. Needs a change of fortunes to shine at Bescot.
More to come
This week it has been reported Colin Lee is in talks with Darren Bazeley, the 29-year-old full back just released by Wolves. Two players are also joining the club on trial over the next few weeks: Jerome Fretard, a defensive midfielder from Sedan in France, and Garry Brady, the ex-Newcastle and Portsmouth midfielder.
The new stand
Work is progressing well on extending the stand formerly known as Gilbert Alsop. You can see photographs of the development on an almost daily basis by clicking here.
Walsall on Sky
Following the recent TV deal that will see Nationwide League games back on Sky, it’s been announced that Walsall’s first game of the new season, against newly-relegated Ipswich, will be shown live, kicking off at 5.35pm on Saturday 10th August.

In an effort to keep Saddlers fans in touch with the financial picture at Bescot, we publish below the latest accounts filed by Walsall Football Club Ltd, which are made up to July 2002.

The figures refer to the 2001-2 season which resulted in securing first division football, but also included the dismisal of Ray Graydon, the hiring of Colin Lee, and the construction of an upper tier on the newly-named Purple Stand.

The document is 25 pages and is in Adobe Acrobat format.
