Corica signs for two more

roger6 @ 11:45 pm Saturday 31 May 2003

Steve Corica will be at Bescot for a further two seasons after signing a new contract with the Saddlers.
The 30-year-old Australian midfielder netted four times in 38 starts last term and was instrumental in our 2001/2002 survival quest, with his good form continuing into last season. However, his form faltered when forced to play in wider positions after Christmas, and he will be hoping to re-capture his sparkling early Saddlers form when the new campaign kicks off in August.

Unrest at Luton Town

roger6 @ 11:45 pm Thursday 29 May 2003

Walsall fans will be upset to hear of the major problems at Luton Town. Last week their ancient chairman sold up, having revealed he’d not been bankrolling them as everyone thought, but “loaning” the club the money; then on Friday the bitter blow as highly-rated manager Joe Kinnear and Hatters legend Mick Harford were sacked. Done in a nice way as well – registered letter to their house! Kinnear turned up for a meeting with the new owners this week to discuss pay-off only to discover the new owners had failed to show…And to top it all the club are set to announce Terry Fenwick as the new gaffer – despite the former Pompey man’s atrocious record at the helm of Northampton in an ill-fated stay earlier this season.
Apparently the club’s sale is all to do with land Luton have bought to build a new stadium close to the M1 – and rumours are strong they are set to merge with Franchise Wimbledon if the league can swallow it.
So if you know any Luton fans, give them your support in these troubled times…

Sheff Wed 2 Walsall 1

The season ended with a defeat in Sheffield over the weekend, but the Saddlers finish in a highly satisfactory 17th place. And, as always, UptheSaddlers regulars were at Hillsborough to see the finale:
Frank Stubbs – Could have won, should have won, didn’t win! In some ways this sums up our season…….But we are the side that is in the 1st division next season – i am sure Wendy would swop 3 points for that. There is no point in analysing players and performances, because a few of today’s starting eleven will be Saddlers no more in a few days time. Positives: Emblem, Roper, Junior, Sammways and oh boy did we miss Martin O’Connor when he went off. I think i have just seen Pedro’s last Walsall goal as well. We are a first division side sorry but i never get tired of saying that. We go away, we re-group, we add a bit more quality, release the last of the dross (no names necessary) and we go forward oh for mid table mediocrity!
Hull Saddler – We were easily the better side but there again we should have been playing against relegated opposition. Thought that we played well at times & should have won.Junior showed why it is important that we make every effort to keep him for next season and there was a lovely build up to Pedro’s goal but after that we switched off a bit.
Paul – Fun in the sun. Very similar to the Stoke game at the end of RG’s first season. No one seemed to care very much but we did look the better team until Owuso replaced Kuqi for Weds. He scored within a minute after we took about a dozen failed attempts to clear the ball from the area. Then he set up a cracking winning goal. They could have had more after that.
