Doncaster 3 Walsall 1
Two seasons ago, Doncaster and Walsall were three divisions apart. Today Rovers further dented Walsall’s League One promotion hopes, inflicting yet another away defeat on the Saddlers, who were beaten 3-1 in an eventful game. Nicky Fenton opened the scoring after 20 minutes and it could have been 2-0 thirteen minutes later when Neil Emblen was adjudged to have handled in the area. Coach Iffy Onoura was banished to the stands for protesting about the decision, claiming that Emblen had been trying to protect his face. Thankfully for the Saddlers, Mark Paston denied McIndoe from the spot with the first of several super stops. Daryl Taylor replaced Joe Broad at half time but Rovers soon doubled their lead thanks to the highly rated Michael McIndoe (50).
Walsall pressed forward and soon put the ball in the net, when Darren Wrack’s effort was spilled by the home keeper, Andy Warrington. The ball trickled goal wards and would have crossed the line. To make sure, Jorge Leitao touched the ball over the line prompting the referee to rule the goal out – Monday’s goalscoring hero was in an offside position. Matty Fryatt emerged form the bench – in place of Birchy - after a foot injury to bag his fifth goal in six games (73) after a fine run and shot as Walsall pressed forward. Simon Osborn and Taylor both came close to dramatic late equalisers before Greg Blundell sealed victory after a mistake by Zigor Aranalde (88).
