Walsall 2 Hartlepool 1

admin @ 9:50 pm Tuesday 07 December 2004

The Saddlers moved to within four points of the play-offs with their 3rd straight league win, after coming from behind to beat Hartlepool at Bescot tonight. Adam Boyd opened the scoring for the visitors towards the end of the first half, firing home a 20-yard effort. Walsall responded early in the second half when Mark Wright found leading scorer Matt Fryatt who scored from close range. Once again it was Paul Merson at the heart of a lot of our attacks with the manager firing a number of shots in at goal. The Saddlers completed the turnaround on 68 minutes when Jorge Leitao cleverly lobbed the keeper after being put clear by Merson.

Is progress finally being made - nine league points out of nine has not happened for over two years.

The focus now switches to Bradford on Saturday, a match which should see the debut of new signing Marvin Robinson, and which will provide a good test of just how far Paul Merson has managed to advance the side in recent weeks.

Elsewhere in league one tonight Danny Wilson has been named manager of the MK Dons and leaders Luton crumbled 2-0 at Brentford, having striker Steve Howard sent off.
