4two @ 8:24 pm Saturday 18 December 2004

Walsall - Murphy, Aranalde, Bennett, Emblen, Wright, Wrack, Kinsella (Broad 74), Standing (Osborn 74), Merson, Leitao, Robinson (D Taylor 83). Not Used: Paston, Jameson.

Blackpool- Bradley Jones, Richardson, McGregor, Clare, Evans, Southern, Wellens, Grayson (Lynch 74), Burns (Bullock 69), Parker, Taylor. Not Used: Lee Jones, Robert Edwards, Anderson.

Never mind 2-2, this one could have finished 4-4. Two sides in good form came head to head in a game that produced one of our best 90-minute performances of the season so far.

Marvin Robinson and Jorge Leitao both had good chances before Blackpool took the lead on 13 minutes, when Scott Taylor was on hand to take advantage of some sloppy play to slot home the first goal of the game. Both sides continued to create chances throughout the half, and it wasn’t until injury time when we finally managed to find an equaliser. Marvin Robinson was the creator with an inch perfect cross for Jorge Leitao on the far post.

Robinson then turned goal getter, putting the Saddlers ahead with another headed goal, created by the craft of a Paul Merson corner. But that lead was short lived, as the aptly named Mr Friend awarded a dubious free kick,. A free kick which Keigan Parker tucked away with ease.

It took the Saddlers 15 minutes to restore their lead, as Marvin Robinson connected with another Paul Merson corner to put Walsall 3-2 up. The last 20 minutes brought some nervous moments. Joe Murphy bailed the Saddlers out with a great save from another Parker free kick, While Taylor and Wellens looked dangerous throughout the half.

Paul Merson and Marvin Robinson both had 1-on-1s with the Blackpool keeper, but lacked the composure or the finish to extend the lead. Neil Emblen was the sponsors man of the match, but Jorge Leitao, Marvin Robinson and Darren Wrack will have all pushed him close.

Marvin Robinson sealed his home debut with two goals as the Saddlers came back from going a goal down to triumph 3-2 against Blackpool. The win lifts Merson’s men into the top 10 in League 1, just 5 points off the play-offs. A full report to come, the afternoon only spoilt by Luton’s last minute winner at Bristol City.
