McShane Leaves - and Herivelto?

neilr @ 2:49 pm Wednesday 12 January 2005

Paul Merson’s plans for Saturday have been thrown into disarray by an injury to Paul McShane.

The Manchester United loanee is suffering from a long standing hip injury which has flared up again and has returned to Old Trafford.

Whether Merson can find another loan or signing for Saturday remains to be seen, but the Saddlers are back to the bare bones in defence.

Meanwhile, there are strong, but as yet unconfirmed, reports on the message board that Brazilian winger Herivelto has returned to his native country, reducing Merson’s options further.

Get a blog on upthesaddlers

UptheSaddlers is always looking for Saddlers fans who want to write their own blog. What is a blog? A blog being an online diary / journal - subject matter could be anything, but given the site’s content, it would be useful if more often than not it was Walsall related.

If you just want to write an occasional piece, you are probably better off using this site’s message board. However, if you can spell, want to write regularly (at least once a week), think you can build up a following, and would enjoy your chance to contribute, get in touch. Email editor@upthesaddlers.com with brief details about yourself and how often you will write, and importantly, give a username (at least 6 characters) and password (which you can change), and the name you would like to Blog under (see examples on this site for inspiration).

Then as soon as you post your first blog, your name will be up in lights (well linked at least) from the front page of upthesaddlers.com

Walsall vs Chesterfield Preview

neilr @ 1:27 pm Wednesday 12 January 2005

It’s an early match preview this week, as your correspondent will be in hospital from tomorrow for three or four days.

After a two week break, following the FA Cup disaster, and a six day rest from training for the players, it’s back to League action for the Saddlers on Saturday with the visit of Chesterfield, currently safely in mid table, following their last day, single point escape from relegation last season.

Walsall should be nearing full strength for this fixture, although Toni Nhleko’s work permit still hasn’t arrived and looks like it will not be granted in time now. Ian Roper and Ryan Willetts both came through this week’s reserve game in one piece following their injuries, (although in view of the result, the may have wished they hadn’t), which leaves Richard McKinney as the only long term absentee. The game may have come a little too early for either of them to be considered for the squad, however.
Team selection should be interesting, as it is difficult to see what Merson is likely to change, despite his threats to do so, given his reluctance to alter the formation. Despite playing three wingers in the reserve fixture this week, we still used a 4 3 1 2 set up, with Herivelto in the “Merson” role.

As for Chesterfield, they will be looking for a double over the Saddlers, but the omens are not too good for them. Their defence is likely to be weakened, with Evatt and Blatherwick, their first choice centre back partnership, being unavailable. Evatt is suspended and Blatherwick had to come off injured at half time against Barnsley, having returned too quickly from an Achilles problem when the team had an illness crisis, and there is still no news about his fitness. One of the obvious replacements, young Aussie defender Aaron Downes, is also out, playing for his country. Manager Roy McFarland has said that he’s looking to bring in at least one player before Saturday, however, following midfielder Sammy Clingan’s return to Wolves at the end of his loan spell.

Chesterfield’s away record isn’t too inspiring, having played 13, won 2, drawn 4, lost 7, scored 12, conceded 20, giving a total of ten points and a goal difference of minus 8!
Despite the fact that we lost quite badly in the away fixture, with the injuries and suspensions that Chesterfield have, plus their less than inspiring away form, I’d have to go with a home win on this one, but this season, who knows? After all, they had similar defensive problems in the first fixture and it made little difference! As I can’t make the game, we’ll probably hammer them out of sight.

Nhleko Problems

neilr @ 10:06 am Wednesday 12 January 2005

Walsall’s hopes of having their new signing, ex Dallas Burn and South African International striker Toni Nhleko, available for the Chesterfield game seem to be disappearing fast, as he is still struggling with his visa application.
Nhleko is still back home in South Africa, according to the Evening Mail, trying to sort out his visa.

Roy Whalley is quoted in the Evening Mail as saying:

“There have been complications with Toni’s application. I’m not privy to what they are but these things can be complex and our lawyers are now trying to unravel the issue.
They are in correspondence with the British consul in South Africa and the player himself is out there trying to resolve it.
We’re pretty much resigned to it not being cleared up before the weekend. We’re hoping for next week but there are no guarantees at all. It is very frustrating.”

Nhleko’s case is different from the problems we had with Junior and the Brazilian FA, as it is only a matter of obtaining a work permit.

(For future reference - and chants - his surname is apparantly pronounced “Klecko”).
