Geordie\’s Pub Guide to Blackpool

neilr @ 9:08 am Wednesday 29 March 2006

Here’s this week’s pubs in conjunction with MMF mystery tours.

So here we are at the traditional zenith of away days, Blackpool. The trip this year of course dedicated to Oli Hewitt who tragically passed away last week.

Oli typified the reclaiming of away trips like this for regular fans who like a pint and some banter with their football.

Joly knew how to enjoy himself, he had a few beers and supported his team passionately but he knew where to draw the line. Even when emotions were running high over the Merson debacle he retained the humour and humility that have always been the most admiral traits of Walsall away followings.

He was a top lad who would have been looking forward to Blackpool, so by way of a bit more organisation this week MMF and the lads have timetabled three watering holes that underpin this week’s pub-guide amidst the chaos of the Blackpool pub scene and the search for that most elusive of football grounds.

We know by now that God laughs when men make plans so accompanied by much heavenly hilarity we will aim for, heading North to South (that’s left to right with the sea at your back)…The Foxhall at 11.30 (that’s AM Saturday morning!). Next is a trip to The Manchester further along the Prom at 12.30, and finishing up at the old favourite, The Dutton Arms on the corner of Waterloo Road and Promenade at 1.30.

Suffice to say in terms of the nature of the bars, they are all fairly cavernous seafront locations geared up for stag and hen “entertainment”, and on match-days very much away orientated, in fact I don’t think I’ve ever seen a tangerine shirt on Blackpool seafront. From The Dutton it’s a straight walk up Waterloo Road to Lytham Road and then left and right into Bloomfield Road.

If you prefer something more traditional, there are plenty of bars on Lytham Road, the pick of which are The Old Bridge and The Auctioneer. Although the service in The Bridge is painfully slow.

Just one thing, don’t forget to go to the match.

Quite a few did last year, and a few more got refused after too much lager. If ever we needed to get behind the lads then this is the one, and what better way than some raucous renditions of “Joly Ollie’s barmy army”. If you need an incentive to avoid making an April fool of yourself just right the word “portaloo” on the back of your hand as a reminder of the delights of Bloomfield Road’s temporary away stand.

And the long range weather forecast is? It’s going to lash it down. Oh dear!!
