This week’s friendlies: Kidderminster, Redditch & Burton

Exile @ 10:11 pm Sunday 29 July 2012

So, after the fund raiser against the Dingles that taught us nothing there’s three more games this week for Deano to run the rule over his new signings and prospects. Better hope one of them is a big, physical target man, as we’re missing that particular type of player, and our forward line looks lightweight at the moment – physically at least, according to fans who’ve seen the formations and players so far.

Tuesday sees Walsall travel to the Harriers for a 7.45 kick off at the splendidly named Aggborough Stadium. There’s bound to be some pubs nearby as there’s nothing else to do in Kidderminster. The King & Castle is right next to the station, Harriers Arms by the ground and there’s a supporters club too. Info taken from internet, at the rate pubs are closing not sure if they’re still there.

Wednesday is a visit to Redditch at Valley Stadium (I think). This’ll be a cut down ‘Walsall XI’ rather than a squad game. Again, a 7.45pm kick off. Bar at the ground, or try the Golden Cross (Unicorn Hill, near the station) for a jar.

Saturday is a friendly away at Burton Albion‘s Pirelli Stadium. Should be a good day out, with a 3pm kick off spoiling a tour of Burton’s excellent pubs. Take your pick of the pubs round here – traditionalists should find Cooper’s, which is legendary. Apparently.

Have fun those who are going. If you know anyone who’s proper nawtee, leave them at home, we don’t want delinquents at a family club.

Brandy Signs?

Neil @ 3:39 pm Thursday 26 July 2012

The BBC’s Nick Clitheroe is reporting on Twitter that former Manchester United youngster Fabien Brandy has become Dean Smith’s latest signing.

The diminutive, if quick, striker (he’s only five foot six) was an extremely promising goal scorer at Old Trafford, but has never quite lived up to that early promise, in loan spells at Hereford, Swansea and Gillingham.

He left United in 2010 and has had short spells at Notts County and Panetolikos in Greece, so will be looking for a chance to prove himself.

I am told that this has now been confirmed on the official site, but I can only get the old version, with Tuesday night’s news!

Pelsall Villa 0-2 Walsall XI

Exile @ 11:33 pm Monday 23 July 2012

A Walsall XI chalked up a 2-0 victory at Pelsall Villa tonight in the first preseason friendly. Football is back, and quick off the mark was Liam Kinsella with Walsall’s first goal, followed by Kieran Morris who scored the second. Well done to all the players.

No full report – guess everyone is out celebrating this first win of the season!

This week’s friendlies: Pelsall, Telford and Wolves

Exile @ 9:26 pm Sunday 22 July 2012

Three friendlies this week to check out the latest signings, youth prospects and triallists at.

Monday sees a Walsall XI visit Pelsall, playing at the Bush Ground in Walsall Road. Dunno how much it costs, but worth a visit as an excuse for a Monday night ale at the Old Bush pub, handily located for further refreshment should the football not be any good. Kick Off is 7.30.

Tuesday sees Walsall travel to Telford. There’s a 7.45 kick off at their Watling Street ground, and you can get in for only eight notes. The Swan Hotel is just up the road, not sure if it’s any good.

Saturday sees the Saddlers hosting the Dingles at the Banks’s's stadium. Tickets twelve quid, or twenty the pair if you buy a ticket for the Baggies game on August 7 at the same time. Kick off for this game is the Saturday standard 3pm.

The good news is that as it’s a full game Saturday, there’s bound to be loads of big name signings this week. Probably for Wolves, made by Stale Sandwich as he tries to make the team his own.

Flo’s Back!

Neil @ 1:29 pm Monday 16 July 2012

The squad rebuilding this summer may have been taking a long time, but, if the emphasis has been on quality over quantity, then no one will object, and the second signing of the closed season has turned out to be quality indeed, in the shape of Belgian under 19 Captain, Florent Cuvelier.

Cuvelier, on his loan period last season proved to be the catalyst in keeping the Saddlers in the division and his return on a six month loan, with a view to a longer period, will be welcomed by all the fans.

With the player having just signed a contract extension at Stoke, it also says a lot about the improvement Tony Pulis sees that he made on loan here and is, in itself, a compliment to Manager Dean Smith.

Now for two or three more of similar quality!

Reminder: Fans Focus Meeting Monday Night!

Exile @ 11:47 pm Sunday 15 July 2012

Don’t forget the Fans Focus Meeting.

When: Monday July 16, 7.00pm
Where: Swifts Lounge, Banks’s Stadium
Who: Stefan Gamble and Dan Mole will be on hand to have a chat and answer questions from supporters.

A good opportunity to get some face time with the club and get whatever’s bothering you off your chest, or congratulate them for doing something right.

These only happen twice a year, otherwise the club talk to the Trust (see their website here) or the Supporters Club every month or two. UTS does not endorse the raising of questions about freeholds and chips.

After a flurry of activity earlier this week when Richard Taundry decided to recommit to the Saddlers, it’s been all quiet at Bescot, apart from a great piece from deano about our youth system, which apparently needs shouting about.

Meanwhile, with preseason training underway, friendlies coming up and a season of football just around the corner, we’ve signed just one player, Ashley Hemmings, who must now be wondering what he’s let himself in for.

As it stands we have the following players:

Grof, Walker, Butler, Taundry, Benning, George, Jones, Chambers, Patterson, Morris, Williams, Hemmings, Bowerman, Grigg
Enopugh to start a match and put subs on the bench. I hope the kids are decent, as the way things stand at the moment they’ll be playing a large part in forthcoming matches!

Ashley Hemmings signs!

Exile @ 7:03 am Thursday 05 July 2012

The first of the new wave as our Ginger Mourinho seeks to reconstruct a Walsall side capable of challenging for promotion (surely ‘staying in this division’? – ed) is Ashley Hemmings.

The diminutive ex-Wolves forward has put pen to paper for a two year stint at Bescot. Standing just five foot six, he’s a left-sided player with pace to burn who is best suited to getting forward and causing problems.

He’s been on the books for the Dingles since 2009, when he was 18, and has been farmed out to Cheltenham and Torquay before doing a decent stint at Plymouth Argyle last year. He looks likely to be used as a winger or provider, as his goals per game ratio suggests he’d be a rival to Alex Nicholls in an out-and-out striker role!

Regardless, he’s young, hungry and ours, so we wish Ash all the best in his career with Walsall. What do you think?

Shrewsbury v Walsall – we’re on the telly!

Exile @ 9:55 pm Monday 02 July 2012

Someone at Sky must think we’re going to make some decent signings, or recognised that the Sloppies v Saddlers is one of those derbies that make real football better than the posturing Premiership.

Our game has been selected for Sky and will be on Sunday 14 October, coverage from 3.30pm, kicking off at 4.00pm.

So we wondered, now that it’s on telly, will you still go to tick off the new ground and taunt our hick neighbours, or will you sit in and watch on TV? Let us know! Talk about this on the messageboards and vote in our poll below.

Going to the Shrewsbury game?
  • I'm still going (61%, 170 Votes)
  • I was never going (24%, 67 Votes)
  • I'm not going now it's on TV (15%, 40 Votes)
