So this is it, our season comes down to these next 3 games. Twin 2 or 3 of these and we will be in a good place for a dash to the line, lose them all and we will find ourselves behind the pack, low on form and confidence and looking for favours, anywhere in between and things will be in the balance and will depend on how all involved do in the run in.
If ever there was a time for us all to get right behind the lads and put aside all moans, groans and doubts for a week, this is it.
Three wins, and we would be virtually certain of promotion.
Three defeats would mean agony - but there would still be 15 points left to play for, and lots of fans of Mat Sadler coming on here saying, “At the start of the season would have snapped your hand off to be in this position with five games to go.”
This means he shouldn’t play Adomah down the middle, he shouldn’t ask Mcentee or Allen to play in midfield, and he should only have one of Comley or Stirk on the pitch at any one time unless we’re trying to dig in.
People concentrate on who we haven’t had available since January (Nathan Lowe), but the availability of some of his favourites has definitely weakened us too.
So on Saturday his best team is something like:
Hornby (in possession of the shirt and kept a clean sheet)
Gordon
Assimwe
Williams
Allen
Okagbue
Lakin/Chang
Stirk
Jellis/Chang
Matt
Wheatley/Harrison
Bench
Simkin/Hornby
Mcentee
Weir
Comley
Lakin/Chang/Jellis
Harrison/Wheatley
Johnson
No Admonah. No Daniels No Lipsiuc, No Levi. The bench has been as unbalanced as me and Kylie on a see-saw to accommodate favourites.
If Harrison is still out then Levi takes the bench.
It won’t look like that. He has a thing for Mcentee, Daniels, Adomah that he can’t see past. Especially the latter.
He does especially the misfiring McEntee, who has gone backwards in my opinion. Add Comley to that list too.
As for Albert, he would always be in or around my team, but not up front. It’s wrong to give him that responsibility.
That would be my team too except I would have Levi up front with Matt …they looked good in the second half at Bromley and I would certainly have Adomah on the bench. He is a class player at this level.
TBH Ive been wrong about the last 2 - i thought would be 2 wins.
Im sure they want it as much as we do - but most teams are fighting and we just need to get to that 83 mark.
But i think 1 big thing Vs Gills - we didnt conceed. Its a great start. This week is absolutely mossive and to come out with 6 points would be a really big achievement.
The unveiling of Asimwe and Chang are chunks of light in the clouds that have been the last 11 games and hopefully Wheatley can get to some of the form that he had at the U21s.
The belief rolls on! We are top of the league, Say we are top’ oth league!
The short response to that question is, “So what?”.
The fact that we exceeded expectations so much in our first 27 games, and had a 13 point lead with no games in hand, would make the failure to achieve promotion this season far more disappointing than if we had just done better than expected, steadily climbed the table, just missed out on automatic, and then didn’t make it to Wembley. Our good start does not make us feel better when looking at the league table now, quite the opposite.
Remember how disappointed we were at Barnsley in 2016? This would be far worse. And anyone who said “At the start of the season I would have bitten your hand off to reach the play-offs” would be lynched.
So it’s likely to to Thursday before he gets back, most likely having flown through the night with his body clock still on dayshift.
I’d be tempted to put Weir in there tbh.
