What’s striking to me is that the two times we’ve had any success over the past 20 years or so, we’ve had someone making the sort of decisions a DoF would. First , the much-maligned Taylor , who was dealing with recruitment, freeing the manager up. Then, completely differently, we had Smith, who appears to have been de facto DoF as well as a manager, trying to convince the board that,if they wanted to go anywhere, there had to be a wider plan .
