Favourite season

98/99 for me. No need to explain. The Money promotion season was the only time in god knows how long I haven’t had a season ticket (newborn twin commitments). I took them at around six months old to the reception thing they did down by the town hall. They’re now 18 and have been season ticket holders since they were little kids. They play themselves and often miss our games now as their matches often clash with Walsall’s. Probably the last year we’ll all have season tickets together, if we do it this year it would probably top 98/99 for those reasons. And it’s about time they witnessed some success!

I always remember Lincoln away towards the end of the Graydon season. I was at Uni in Leeds. Drove down on my own. We won 1-0. Wrack took it round the keeper in what seemed like slow motion. If my memory is correct I think City lost at home to Colchester on the same day and I can still remember someone with a radio conveying that news. I think Sean Devine scored for Colchester!

Perhaps you should take some time before you post in future then :+1:

Preferably a couple of years

It was a comment on that match, you know, from the match thread you posted :joy: :joy: :joy:

Christ almighty, you are having one this morning aren’t you

One of the most dominant away wins I’ve ever seen, remarkable how it only finished 2 0. I think City were well off it at that point of the season, Stoke were looking nailed on to win automatic but we beat them the week after and their season unravelled.

Wycombe, who completed the double over Citeh that day.

There was a spell in the second half when they just couldn’t get the ball even to the half-way line, we just kept pinning them back. We had corner after corner for a while and when they eventually cleared one, or maybe it went out for a goal kick, there was loud, ironic cheering from the home fans.

Mine as well

Roper and Gadsby at the back - they were immense.

I agree Andrew, that year was superb and we had some great and good players. Nobody was shit and they all cared.
Mind you I’m pretty pleased with this season so far:muscle::muscle:

So far it’s 1998/99 for me.

Coincided with the start of life at University for me - chose one in the North West purely on basis of there being a number of away days that could do e.g. Preston, Citeh, Burnley although when fixtures came out, meant that a number of those fell when home for holidays or before started.

No-one gave us a chance - Sir Ray and his rag bag side of free transfers, misfits and youngsters mixed it all year with big spenders like Fulham. If people at Uni didn’t know who Walsall were when I started in September, they sure as hell did come May.

The best days.

It was cold that day, cold in Oldham, who’d have thought it! I think Walter Otta scored didn’t he? And possibly Rambo, or was it Wrack?

You could point to a lot of pivotal games that season. I always felt the win at Bristol Rovers was huge, after getting beat heavily at Fulham the week before and being 2-0 down at Bristol. That team just didn’t know when it was beat.

The 2-1 at Millwall in the League, sandwiched between the two Auto Windscreen games with them, seemed important too. That said, I was positive we’d blown it after the Gregan masterclass at Deepdale, but a week later…

I can see why you would mention the Brizzle match. After losing to Fulham the week before we went on to have a really good run and didn’t lose again to any team that wasn’t called Wigan until the end of February.
I’d throw in Gillingham at home too, it was after a slight hiccup of two points from three games and they hammered us for the last 20 minutes or so and we passed the test and won 2-1. Northampton away was another, they really put pressure on towards the end but they hadn’t kicked Jimmy Walker out of the game on that occasion and we withstood the attacks.

And it was Rambo and Tarka who scored against Oldham, and it was cold, although by Oldham standards it was fairly tropical I suppose.

I went to both the Millwall games. We played far better in the one we lost!

The Preston game, not a good night. I was so upset after that game. Had a huge argument with my Dad, which I never did ever. I didn’t speak to him all week. Popped in his local after work on the Friday night to face the music, bricking it a bit! His first words were, “How are we getting to Lincoln tomorrow” :grinning: Still to this day out of all the days I have had following Walsall, Lincoln away that year is still my favourite.

It’s interesting thinking back to the promotions we have had since we moved to Bescot, four in all and only one in which promotion was secured at home. Looking at the fixtures at the end of this season, if all continues to go well, it would be nice to be able to secure it at home rather than limited capacity away days at Barrow, Newport or Crewe. Harrogate or Accrington at home would be great as we’d have a lot of room for everyone to attend.

Standout seasons for me:

1985/86
1986/87
1987/88
1994/95
1998/99
2000/01
2002/03
2006/07

Best was Sir Ray in 1999. Off the charts!

Appears to me that my first 17 years were pretty unreal. Been a bit bleak since ay it or maybe historically just very Walsall although being in this lowest tier recently has been forgettable for large chunks of it

94-95 is my choice because I went to pretty much every game back then home and away and we had some brilliant players for that level Martin O’connor Kyle Lightbourne Kevin Wilson Scott Houghton to name a handful.
