Thats all our strikers getting goals in pre-season, if you exclude Levi who’s gone.
Wing backs and especially their end product as we all know with this system are crucial to it working successfully.Thats where Liam was lacking and Barrett just fell off a cliff form wise last season. Both are not fully to blame for what happened of course but it was certainly part of it all.It would be nice to have some threat in the middle of the park too because once teams successfully nullify your wing backs and every team we face will try too, it would help to make the opposition think a bit more with that threat in the middle of the park.
The central 3 are supposed to supply the ball to the ring of players surrounding them. Sadly, in the second half of the season this didnt happen. The wing backs tried to do it on their own and pump in wayward crosses and the defensive component of the circumference just bypassed the central links by wellying it up top.
In my view either the players werent good enough to play the system correctly or the manager didnt have a scooby.
Maybe both!
One glimmer of hope for me for this upcoming season. watch them all start shanking it out of play as soon as the season starts
I’ll go for the manager theory
Wonder if sawyers played and was given more than half a game?
Great work by them both, great to see them scoring and puts them in a good position to contribute well this season.
Respect them both
Just saw a good quote from Robbie Savage regarding our defending.
On the lack of shooting against Walsall, Savage said,
"I was saying shoot but when we watched it back the defenders had gotten themselves into such good positions that we couldn’t shoot…And that’s why they (Walsall) were one goal away from League One.
Shame we had a chap on the bench or roaming around West Midlands Safari Park that might have scored the goal(s).
Indeed, and the reason we failed in 2nd half of last season is that the defence went to shite, and we were conceding 2 a game.
Not really on the forwards who were still scoring fairly consistently.
Did Weir come on in this match?
No. He, RAM and Hornby were the only unused subs out of the 11 named.
Browne got the nod to start at LCB, and then moved over to RCB when Burke had to go off, and was replaced by Cox - which begs the question of where that leave Evan in the pecking order.
Was thinking the same thing, we might even see Cox tomorrow
Are you on the right board? Thats a bit OTT for a Friday morning
But a couple of starts or extended subs for DJ would OF (sic) seen us promoted. Still furious about that.
BTW, how’s DJ doin’ now?
I’m only going on what I can find online, but I don’t think he has played a minute, yet.
He played all 4 pre season games
Scored 2- 1 vs middlesbrough
National league starts tomorrow
This is correct, however if DJ had played more early season then we probably wouldn’t have had the same success early on. Lowe and Matt were a superb match but DJ should have played more when Lowe went back.
Thanks for that, I didn’t realise that the National League hadn’t started.
I’m backing him to bag a fair few goals.
