Is 5,000 our glass ceiling?

I haven’t looked into it in any detail but have seen a few articles about it. Cheap season tickets, free rail travel and so on.

I don’t know if all Premier League tickets are a rip off, but I feel the prices at our level are way too high. Not just Walsall of course, which makes it very difficult for us to do anything.

Only been once, (Dortmund last season) but everything was ridiculously cheap.
Tickets, beer, food, and as ams99 says matchday public transport is free.
In the ground I paid 17 Euro for two footlong sausages in an equivalent sized baguette and 6 pints of beer, and that was in the Champions League. Free matchday festival in the old square all day long. Beer from the bars and beer tents was 4 Euro, or you were allowed to go to the local shop and buy half litre bottles for 1 Euro, or crates of 24 for 20 Euro which is what most people ended up doing. I spent more money in the bar at Newcastle airport waiting to board the flight than I did all day in Dortmund.

Imagine a privatised network fulfilling a public service.

Not sure if it applies to the games you went to, but was there a large safe standing area at these games.
I think that if we had such an area, we would benefit, where groups could go to a game on impulse and stand together. Maybe going to a game as a group is too much hassle without prior preparation.

Also didn’t realise 20,000 attended the milk cup semi final v Liverpool at Fellows Park. That would have been a good top flight crowd back then. Always thought it was 12 or 13k.

There was more than the announced gate there that night too, I would say.

The home end in Cologne is a standing terrace. I assume seats are rolled in and out when they reached the Champions league / international matches are played there.

Similarly at The Veltins Arena i was on the standing away terrace with the Leipzig fans.

Not sure about Frankfurt. I was seated and particularly drunk :joy:

Would be rude not to be if the prices were as Geordie said!

I’m surprised it’s not rail seating, like other German grounds.

Well cheap tickets, more community owned etc. Some huge clubs in their second division now, Hertha Berlin, Hamburg and Schalke all played in CL in last 15 years.

One thing I’ve always liked over there is match ticket allows free public transport if you’re using a train/tram to get to the stadium. No doubt attempting to introduce something like that in this country would take a decade to pass a bill or something stupid.

A Sporting railcard would be very popular though, don’t understand why it’s never been thought of as an idea unless it was discounted.

Yes and only 6000 turned up to the next league game. Wonder where they all went.

Ive just refreshed my memory by looking at my photos. The home end is standing terrace. Elsewhere there are rail seated parts. Looks like i was sitting in them and didnt notice :joy:

I think there was more than 20k in fellows park that night. Absolutely rammed full and overspill everywhere. Wall buckled in the liverpool end. They must have had 9/10k in there

Matalan?

Shalke one of the traditionally best supported clubs in Germany. Went to Hertha Berlin last season and the away fan attendance was something daft like 20,000 that day. Huge support.

Clubs like Hamburg, Kaiserslautern and Koln get big home crowds aswell.

6,144 attendance yesterday with 733 away fans. So 5,411 saddlers, 133 more than v Tranmere.

It’s an upward trend.

If we can get promoted this year and then hold our own / challenge for play off spots I think the attendances will gradually improve. We will never be the best attended club in the Midlands but I do think crowds of 7000 to 8000 are realistically possible.

Hate to say it but our support on Saturday was pretty crap, the team deserved a lot more!

Not sure what the answer is at the moment.

Here’s a dilemma if Walsall win the league or get promoted by the end of march will most fans stop going to the remaining games because the jobs been done

Unfortunately, it’ll take a couple of big signings to get a few more through the doors.
It’s a shame, because the current squad deserves better support.
