L 5-1 vs AFC Wimbledon (A) - League Two - Sat 27th April, 3pm

That is it in a nutshell and it is intensely frustrating. When we had our run of wins, it was on the back of solid defence with dangerous attacks. More or less, we still looked dangerous - even yesterday we had plenty of shots and chances to score - but we have been leaking so many goals from simple crosses.

I did not see players failing to put in the effort but I did see players losing it when the third goal went in. To their credit, they did resettle the ship and carried on until the end.

One good thing, possibly the only one, was that Jellis looks to have potential. He obviously works hard and demonstrated he has some skill too. He could turn out to be a very astute signing.

I’m shocked Andy is actually saying we’ve be lied to .:weary::weary:

Ok, we’ve been let down by those in charge previously, but surely you can tell a difference between now and before Trivela.

Nope not on the field team wise .yet ,start next season in same league.missed opportunity playoffs this year .poor last 10 games ,solid base for next season grave reservations. await the retaining list .then I’ll tell you my thoughts on Trivela and any difference.

I think that’s a very telling statement. I would concur that the club is ‘soft’. Pushovers on and off the pitch. Nice people with no backbone win nothing.

The problems were arising more so when people had left their tickets with someone they were with still in their seats, which is quite common, and then they weren’t allowed back inside to go back to their seats.

DJ not being able to sign was a real sliding doors moment for Flynn, DJ, and us. I’m adamant Flynn would probably still be here now if he had, and we’d have had a much better season overall last season.

Just realised that in the last two games, we’ve conceded 8 goals and all 8 were crosses into the box :joy:

There are 3 responses that I’d like to make to this perceptive observation, @Bags10:

1.) when Sadler rolls out his usual nonsense of ‘When we’re good, we’re very good” and “That’s not like us”, why can’t journalists reply with, “well, actually Matt, that’s not the case.”

2.) to play devil’s advocate, the players need to accept some accountability because I’m sure that Sadler and his analyst can see what supporters can see.

3.) in the cold light of day, its probably just as well that it’s the end of the season because, in all honesty, when I saw the starting eleven yesterday (with Matt up top and Farq back in the fold) I thought that it was the right team to face a ‘direct’ Wimbledon outfit.

Point being, what else could have been done? Maybe the summer transfer window will reveal how ruthless the management team (including O’Kelly) can be…

By the way, I think Big Dave knows Donervan from his WBA days and wouldn’t be surprised if he offered him a way out of Walsall to join Port Vale ‘for a nominal fee’ in the summer…

You’d think a decent manager may have done something to stop that.

I was one of the very few who thought we should have stuck with Mick at the end of last season, there were a number of abnormal circumstances he had to deal with, that doesn’t mean the latter knockings of last season were in any way acceptable but I also don’t believe every time we find a performance or a rubln of form unacceptable the managers head should always be on the block.

It’s been and gone now and here we are with Sadler and as such if the board are happy with the progress we are making, and the statement goes much further than being happy, by all accounts they are delighted with Mats work. So as such we need to be a united force and rally behind our gaffer and his players. Our chances of success are diminished hugely if there is a papable sense of dissatisfaction coming from the audience.

Just need stronger defenders for me.

Foulkes was targeted last week and for how well he’s played in the last 2 months, I’m not convinced by Allen as a centre half, especially against these physical sides.

He gives us balance being left footed, gets forward well and has a decent set piece delivery, but as a centre half he isn’t going to put his head through everything.

Farquharson and Daniels are fine on that part, but they’re obviously not 100% fit at all and they both need abit of time off now to go again next season fully fit.

I hope that Sadler gets the wages from releasing some of the high earners, to attract some new signings who start, rather than supplement the squad.

If you think about it, Evans, Matt and Riley will be on a good wage.

If we could find buyers for DJ and Donervan (eg Port Vale or Chesterfield), plus if Wrexham go in for Hutch, that’s frees up a massive percentage of the playing budget.

Allen is such a good user of the ball I wonder if he could be converted into a quarterback type deeply lying midfielder.

I agree with a lot of that, much stronger defending balls into the box required.

There is something not right about our system though. Sadler insists on this high press, or basically players chasing around like crazy, but if you watch us we defend really deep, too deep often and stand offish. There is no cohesion between the different parts of the team and it often leaves big gaps. I’m not a football expert, just an observation. Defenders still need to do their jobs regardless though.

I also wonder whether we could play more ‘traditional full backs’ behind Liam Gordon and possibly, Knowles.

As O’Kelly alluded to, we might need to rethink the formation and get rid of the 3 at the back ‘experiment’.

For example, a fit Harry Williams and McEntee would be perfectly acceptable centre halves in a flat back four.

If Hutch does leave, it does give the manager a bit more freedom to look at a 442 or 4411, or even a 433, given the players that remain in the squad. Ironically, fewer defenders might make us tighter at the back, because playing 3 is only doing what a good 2 could do, without deficiencies (that Donervon, Okagbue and arguably, Allen, blatantly had).

Not being funny, but if we had bought a bleeding right back in the summer or in January, we probably wouldn’t have shipped in so many goals from crosses!!!
