James Wilson. Another wicked preview Steve ![]()
Andy Williams, Alfie Chang, Myles Roberts (albeit I don’t think he made an appearance for them)
2-1, tight game. All together now: I can’t read, I can’t write, that don’t really matter…
First game I ever attended was v Bristol Rovers in the FAC1, in ‘64 I think. We lost 0-2 but I’m hoping for better this time round!
Great preview Stevie
Kenny Stephens was a Rovers legend and also played for us a few times.
And not only did Ray Graydon start his playing career at the Gas but he also managed them after leaving us. He is one of (at least) three managers we have in common, the other 2 being Brough Fletcher and, of course, Darrell Clarke.
I remember going to Eastville the Saturday after we lost 2-0 to Liverpool in the second leg of the league cup semi final at Fellows Park. We lost that one 4-2. Remember a few over the years including the 5-0 mentioned by Belgian.
UP THE SADDLERS
Kenny Hibbitt played for Rovers that day.
Miah Dennehy
I was a student at Nottingham in the late 70’s and I saw Miah sitting at the bar of the Irish Social Centre in the city supping a pint of Guinness. I went up to him and introduced myself, and weirdly the first thing he asked me was whether I was “getting enough.”
Maybe doing a bit of pimping on the side? ![]()
Whitney got a lot of stick but beating them 4-1 at home in 16/17 was actually one of the favourite games from that era after DS left (not a huge amount to choose from admittedly). Oztumer and Joe Edwards were superb that day in the midfield area and think Bristol Rovers were in the top 6 at the time so Clarke’s high point as a manager.
Then a season or two after played them in a very boring 0-0 on Boxing day which was more memorable for the bogs flodding and then Stef Gamble coming out afterwards and saying it was unfortunate as it was a bigger crowd than usual. There were less than 5k home fans in the ground that day.
I actually think Bristol Rovers are a bit of an underachieving club in last two decades. Their fanbase is probably similar to their neighbours but they can’t sort the ground out and get into a modern 15k site. If they did they’d be similar to a Rotherham I reckon.
Is this Clarke’s first return since leaving? I think he’ll come with the mentality of not wanting to lose so this feels a 1-1.
No, he’s been back with Port Vale…. and lost.
Edit: Although on checking, he wasn’t at the game as he was gradually returning to managerial duties after his bereavement.
It was a 2-0 win to the Saddlers with goals from Sam Perry and Emmanuel Osadebe.
David Mehew I think.
Unfortunately a game I missed (going through a divorce at the time) but under Big Fat Jan we beat them away in whatever the Vertu was back then with a Roger Boli “golden goal”.
The game finished 0-0 after 90 and apparently Roger was trooping off as he though that meant a replay, only to be told that it went into extra time with “next goal the winner”. He got the ball almost immediately after the restart, ran the length of the pitch and scored, then turned to another of our players to ask ”Is that OK - can we go now?” ![]()
4-1 to the good guys
Started on the sherry a little early haven’t we …

Walsall 2-3 Bristol Rovers
Att. 7,535
I feel our run will come to end on Saturday I expect goals galore.
I fully expect Rovers to sell out their allocation and create an electric atmosphere.
Shouldn’t it be gas not electric?
He wasn’t in attendance. Sorry, just noticed your edit.
