Was a big multi car accident on the M6 on the way home as well, I know as me and my dad were in it :frowning:

Can remember doing port vale away mid 80’s when one of my mates got his first car ford escort mark 2 pimped to the 9’s but just a standard 1600 engine ,no sat nav we had been before but couldn’t remember so I brought one of those early edition football ground guide books. Travelling up the m6 it said get off junction 16 and take first left which we did. A good 30 mins later after realising something was wrong we embarrasingly asked someone where the ground was to which the person didn’t know. There was 4 of us in the car with 3 of them getting really annoyed. We went on another 10 mins then one of my mates grabbed the book off me looked at it them whacked me over the head with it. I had been reading the instructions as though travelling north to south not south to north! I can laugh at it now and my mates still mention it 35 years later but at the time I was not flavour of the month so to speak and for a good while later was made to sit in the back of who’s ever car we went in threatened not to say a word!

Brilliant. :smiley::smiley:

We used to follow the instructions in the preceding weeks’ programme. Don’t really think about it now with sat navs but back then it was the big AA book and those instructions from last weeks’ programme.

Dad driving and me navigating. What could possibly go wrong? Lots as it turns out. It was as though somewhere within those programme notes there was a little tester just to keep you on your toes.

In my role as navigator I always preferred the night games as the old school floodlights could usually be seen for miles around.

If we are going to climb up the league got to beat teams like these, but still feel close game 1.1 or wilks to get the winner

First time I went to Port Vale, I followed the notes from a very old programme I had.
Went all round the houses to get there, only to realise on the way back following everyone else away from the ground, we ended up on the A500 which had been built since the programme notes were written.
Got back home to Darlaston in no time.

Which would have been OK, but you were trying to find Aldridge. :joy:

Night games definitely better years ago to find the ground unless you had a coach driver that was totally useless. I remember going to Anfield in 84 on a private coach from Pelsall organised by sim mayo. We had a coach driver that struggled to find Liverpool let alone Anfield.i remember us driving though some part of the city which made Beirut look like four oaks and stopping to ask some little scouse person which way to the ground. They promptly directed us to another even worse area with the coach being stonned several times and at one point us stopping and several very brave blokes getting off to confront them, but quickly getting back on after several bricks thrown later. Great memory especially of my late dad who went with me standing in the corner of Anfield being squashed and him deciding he wanted a bovril. After gone at least 20 mins to return and fight his way to me then Kevin Sommerfield scored at which point his bovril went everywhere with him celebrating the goal then moaning about spending 50p on a wasted drink! He made up for it on the way back with the beer provided by Sim mayo who owned the off licence, great memory

Yeah I did think that reading it to be honest. For all our height in the team we don’t score many headers or hold the ball up much or get flick one.

Sounds like the driver I went to Millwall with in the 90s for a night game, he became hopelessly lost and stopped to ask the way. At least they didn’t brick the coach, but they weren’t helpful, what an idiot, of all the places to stop, and in the dark. At one point he collided with a bus shelter, and a road sign, and he went over a couple of red lights, worst driver ever. Because we were in the back streets, we did have a few things thrown at us, but luckily the glass didn’t get hit. Unbelievably, the hat was passed round for him on the way back. He didn’t get much.
Thing is, Millwall is a doddle to find, you can’t go wrong, I’ve driven it loads of times.

Been to Millwall a few times. Best one was when we played them I think in 99 auto windscreen area final. 3 of us went in a car my mate driving trusting me with the a-z. Sorted a place to park right opposite a pub not far from the ground. Deadly quiet area with the pub looking like know one was in it. How wrong we were when we entered. You could of heard a pin drop as we went in. The place was packed and everybody seemed to know each other except us.it was one of those what do you do moments. We went straight to the bar pointed at the larger pull putting 3 fingers up not saying a word. Paid drank up and left keeping an eye on our rear just in case. Thankfully having visited since it doesn’t seem as bad now.

Win win situation here though Oldham recent form isn’t bad Dylan Bahmboula for them …Danger man I’m more then sure mayo and monthe have got him locked.
Our next permanent signing should be mayo

Still cant believe Mansfield let him on loan to us as they back 4 were shambles against us and still are so poor

And also as much as I like rory he should go waste of money…brilliant talent but can’t get him self fit or on the pitch should let him go in Jan will hurt but not so much as dne F all fr us this season…im starting like earing tbh and paddy’s getting better to

We went to that one on a coach, can’t remember who organised it now but it wasn’t an official coach. As I remember it they put the coaches inside the main gates. I don’t think they were expecting our coach and we had to wait outside the main gates for a bit while it was sorted out. There was a congregation of Millwall fans there, we were fully expecting to get pelted. It didn’t happen thankfully but I always remember there was an old woman there, easily in her late 80s, with one of those shopping bags on wheels, giving it the W***** gesture at us. I don’t think she was going to the match, just come along to give it the big n :grinning:

I took a bit of a beating at the home leg. On the way out some bright spark shouted something into the away end and a load of them come piling out and chased a load of Walsall fans. I really couldn’t run so ended up taking a few punches and kicks, nothing to bad luckily they left me and went off to join the chase.

Its somewhat inclement down here.lovely!!

Don’t say you’ve had to put a coat on Dave (aka a string vest to a Geordie)?

How is Stacey enjoying her anniversary break? We’ve got next week off as it’s my birthday and finally decided against going abroad for a few days as usual as too much of a pain in the backside with the testing etc, so we’re going for a few days to Plymouth (again) and then to London as my missus wants to do a show - and I’ve got us a hotel in Sutton for the Friday and Saturday nights.

Actually it is unseasonally warm. She’s fine, just tucking into an enormous pasty. Of course we’ve got the pesky football bit to come yet. :grimacing:
