Waddock - Our Deputy Manager

Something to think about.
Do any of us know what Gary’s role is at the club?
He appears to be Mat’s deputy, but having sat near the dugouts, I haven’t seen much communication between them.
Mat always seems isolated in his 6 yard box, and the other backroom staff seem happy to leave him unsupported.
Most managers choose their deputy, but correct me if I’m wrong, I don’t remember Mat having any say in Waddock’s appointment. Was he already in place when Mat Sadler took on the manager’s job?
I watch opposition managers, and most work as a team with their coaches and deputies. It doesn’t happen at Walsall as far as I’ve seen.
Do we see this as a problem?
On Tuesday it was noticeable that the players on our bench were very quiet and even Albert Adomah, who is normally very vocal, had little involvement during the game.
I’m probably reading too much into this, but at a time where we’re struggling to impose ourselves in games, I would expect to see the deputy working closely with the main man, to get the most out of the squad.

Something to think about. Maybe that’s what our manager wants. Maybe the players do what they want instead of conforming to a stereotype. Maybe you’re shitstirring.

Its more important what they do on the training pitch and behind the scenes, and presumably having us top of the league their working relationship can’t be all that bad, regardless of the current poor run.

And you do see Sadler going across to the bench where Waddock and Byfield are during games often enough.

I’m sure half of the time managers spend on the touchline during a game is just to be vocal to the referee and fourth official anyway.

Wasn’t one of things that Mat said earlier in the season that the players were problem solving themselves on the pitch?. Obviously they’ll go into detail on the training groind during Thursday and Friday of the plan for A Saturday matchday. Perhaps the players are struggling with problem solving atm and may need a bit more on the hoof input from the coaching staff?.

We are not far off analysing whether the kit man is laying out the kit with feng shui in mind to avoid upsetting the balance between the yin and yang, in fact balls to it, kit man out……must be his fault. :see_no_evil:

Waddock was appointed after Sadler got the job.
Was the lack of communication and vocal encouragement a problem before 5 games ago? There were moments in all of our good performances where we were 2nd best.
Maybe if Sadler and Waddock had spent 25 games next to each other in the technical area bollocking the players we would have won all of them.
I have sat behind the dugout for some of the cup games. Sadler always spoke to Waddock and Byfield throughout and looked at the video analysis on the laptops.
I think you are reading too much into it.

Completely agree with the above, had a ticket with work on Tuesday and sat in the Main Stand for the first time, never heard so many moaners! One said why doesn’t Sadler and the coaches scream and shout at the players. If he started doing that at this point in the season the players would think he/waddock have lost his marbles!

Maybe we should all walk through the turnstiles backwards this Saturday .

I believe that FA and EFL rules prohibit more than 1 member of the management team or backroom staff from standing in the technical area at any one time.

I sit behind the dugout at various points in every game Sadler will have a discussion with Waddock and Byfield. Before he makes any changes they generally have a discussion too. Waddock is experienced in getting promotions and Sadler values his input

At the fans meeting MS also said that Waddock spent a lot of time before games analysing the opposition and took the lead at the session on the opposition which the players sit through on Fridays. I sit at the back of the main stand and I do hear MS shouting from time to time but Sir Ray never shouted during games and I think had some success.

Does he wave like Dicky Dosh did?

Sir Ray, rarely even sat on the bench, he used to sit at the back of the main stand to watch the game.

I’m hoping that Sadler is taking wise counsel from the likes of Waddock, but especially Richard O’Kelly. Sadler needs help to see navigate through this period.

Isn’t it stange how such questions are never asked when we are winning well

Whenever we put in a poor performance even the tea lady isn’t out of danger of scrutiny :joy:

I had wondered about this actually. Is she doing anything different with the tea do we think ? Too strong - stewed not brewed ? Is the milk ratio correct ?

It could explain a few things .
