50 Years Ago Tonight Who Went

Cant belive its been 50 Years tonight any one else go that night Man Utd at home in the FA Cup Still got the ticket.

No, but might still have my brother’s ticket somewhere. I was one of the glory hunters who started by going to the voucher games for the Newcastle game.

Me . Due to crowd congestion ,we were in the Cowshed. Much of the first half was blocked by police moving fans along the track. I remember surprisingly little about the actual match. I do remember Bernie terrorising their young centre half- Arnie Sidebottom?

Me too. The 50th anniversary of my first game will be next Tuesday (we beat Grimsby 2-0).

Spookily, between the Man Utd and Grimsby games we were away at Peterborough - where we will be again next Tuesday …

I was there. I will try and find the newspaper reports which I kept for every game around that time. The scrapbooks have survived several house moves as I knew they would come in useful one day!

Remember it like yesterday. Was in the cowshed / Railway end.
Was a great night

I went with a school.mate who was a United fan.

That was easier than I thought. Hope they are readable.

I was going to post a thread myself when I got home, but I have been saved the bother. What a night. No school on the Tuesday, and I couldn’t wait to start the new term the next morning, we had a few plastic Manc glory-hunters (sorry I mean “lifelong loyal fanatics”) in my class and it was nice to be top dog for once.
I can’t remember any details, just have memories of how good it felt.

Yes, he played in both games. I don’t think he was with them much longer. One of those I have seen live playing both football and cricket.

Yes I was there. Such a shame the TV footage of those cup games has been lost, or wiped.

I would have gone, but i was really busy that night, not existing ha

I was there .In the Cowshed on the half way line my “home” for many years. Many of the folk who were around me that night are no longer with us but 2 of my best friends are still around and support the Saddlers. It was a wonderful night and like someone above my clearest memory is Bernie Wright’s performance who tore the United defence to pieces. I remember thinking he won’t be here long!!

Us oldies will have rely on fading memories.
I remember the first goal quite vividly with Brian Taylor racing down the wing and thinking “No way will Bernie score from there” but he did!

I was in that end with a mate as well

Fabulous night. Got there later than originally planned as I smashed my car up on the way home from work. Presumably the anticipation and excitement got to me, with my mind elsewhere. Once I’d got the car home, hastily got changed and sought alternative means of transport, i.e. the bus.
Fairly sure I entered the ground via the turnstiles behind the Saddlers Club at the Railway End, finally managing to get a spot on the bank at the opposite corner at the junction between Railway End and Popular Side. I remember it being rammed there and I couldn’t get a better spot. Managed to see all the action though.

In contrast me and my dad were there so early that the turnstiles had only just opened and we were two of the first people in! He wanted to make sure he could get his 9 year old son down at the front leaning on the cowshed wall! I’d been to a few 3rd division games before that - but that magical night made me a lifelong saddler. I can’t remember much about the match either - other than the elation when we won!

We must have stood pretty much next to each other then.
My grandad took me from 1970 when I was 4 and I’d always sit on the wall by the halfway line in the cowshed.
I have very little memory in general, but particularly none of the Man U game, more so of the Newcastle game, if the Newcastle game was the one where there was fighting at the back of the cowshed?

Pretty much next to me too! Yes I remember the trouble at the Newcastle game - the police waded in and were marching them out, some in hand cuffs, around the pitch. Blocked my view for most of the second half!

Something rather comical about blokes in floral shirts with massive collars, flares and a pair of Solatios fighting.
