90 minutes from Europe book

My dad found this photo of the 90 minutes from Europe poster. Not the sharpest of images, unfortunately. It was taken somewhere in Walsall. Does anybody recognise where?

I’m sure that’s Bloxwich Road.

Seem to remember walking past those advertising hoardings on Sunday evenings as a kid after being at my grandparents for the weekend.

EDIT: Just checked Google Maps and it is.
The junction of Bloxwich Road and Leckie Road.

The junction has been filled in so it doesn’t look like that now but you can see the row of houses plus the house in the background and there’s still a bus stop there now but with a shelter.

Yes, that’s the spot. Thanks so much for posting this

@SimonTurner There were a few dotted about Walsall in 1984. This is the only colour one I know to, in Blue Lane Walsall town with the old ‘cop shop’ in the background.

That’s a great photo. Interesting that the spots where both posters were have changed over the years. Nothing stands still…

Indeed @SimonTurner

That’s the one I remember, Bloxwich Road, or maybe Stafford Street by then, coming up to Hospital Street. There was a butchers in that terrace. I first saw it when my bus was at that very stop. It was only when I looked for a second time that I realised who was on the photo. It was so unexpected.

I remember the picture was on a billboard in Blue Lane West, just over the road from Burrowes Street where my folks lived. I drove past it a few times and had a quick chuckle: Walsall in Europe - yeah right. After the 2-2 draw at Anfield I was ready to believe, only to be brought down to one of my lowest lows as a football supporter in the second leg. I hope we get to experience those highs again - it makes up for all the dross in between!

Memories - I used to play football and cricket on that piece of land next to the billboard! I miss my old home town

I passed one on a billboard on the Warwick Road in Olton. I was working for Lucas Aerospace in Solihull and travelling to their site at Shaftsmoor Lane.

@SimonTurner
In the book you mention support from BA to reproduce the advert.
Do you have a contact to get a printed copy supplied?

Hi. The only contact I have is that which is mentioned in the book. I don’t know whether they can provide a printed copy. I reckon they’d have a few customers if they can !

Well my copy arrived from Amazon yesterday - after today, I have a couple of days off so going to sit down with a few cups of tea and start reading.

@deanonev69 and anyone else who has ordered the book / or thinking of doing so Its brilliant. Only had chance to read the first chapter so far but my initial observation is that @SimonTurner has put a lot into this. Its a very informative account and the use of his recent player interviews has paid dividends. Well researched and some great colour pictures. Superb book imo.

Team photograph from 1984. Described in the newspaper as ‘Buckley’s Babes’…

A very young David Kelly there. Only one i don’t recognise is the guy on his right, blonde hair. Anyone remind me?

No wonder Buck looks so proud !
