Aston Villa (H) - Friendly, Sat 15th July, 1:00pm

No Dallas.I’m guessing if he was there he’d have come on for DJT or before DJT if he was.

What did we think to Lalkovic today? Did OK again for me less time on the ball due to the opposition though.

Not much on ball, good corners though!

Worth a one year deal for me

He tried really hard and got frustrated. Should have been able to show his quality more against what was mostly a villa b team. I’m On the fence with him and trust whatever decision Sadler makes on Him tbh.

Cant really judge him from today’s game hardly touched the ball.

Josh Feeney started for them at CB.

Only 18 but he was making some Fleetwood squads in early 2021 so feels like he’ll go out on loan this season.

Of course it’s settled currently with Daniels, Lord Farq and Hussey but Huss is mid 30s so won’t be starting 40 times a season you’d imagine.

Depends if Sadler is going to keep McEntee in midfield all season, he started the final games there so feels like that’s his regular position now and he’ll fill in at the back when neccesary.

Overall the team is shaping up o.k but not convinced by either wing back and DJT going off injured still shows there’s a need for another striker in the squad imo.

Agree with this although I’m more convinced with Gordon than I am with Knowles. I know he can run quick but I just don’t see it with Knowles, final ball is lacking and I’m not convinced on him defensively. Foulkes feels more of a traditional RB than a WB. To me it feels like if we are going to play a system with WB then the right side needs sorting.

Some good signs today: we were well-organised and DJ showed that he is a natural goalscorer- one chance, back of the net! I still think we need some more creativity in midfield - McEntee is okay but he’s not creative. We also need someone to break forward from midfield and occasionally get in front of the strikers. Other than that, we are not far away.

Ref wasn’t Kettle though. Don’t know where it came from that said it was him

Very one-paced game but a few positives for us (as well as minutes in the tank).
Back 3 (first half) and keeper are solid. Hussey good left peg and appears in good fitness for an old un.
Gordon looked sharp.
Impressed with Stirk. A ratter who can pass.
Draper looked a little lost but early days.
Think we may lack a bit of pace going forward but hopefully we can sort that.
If Matt is to start, he will definitely need some form of wide supply. He is a handful but won’t be running too much.

I’m not comparing Matt with Andy Rammell (imagine the reaction from some posters!) but there are plenty of good centre forwards that don’t run around that much and still do an important job. Again, a random comparison but Frank Stapleton is seen as a brilliant striker who played for some top clubs but his goal return was pretty average, back in the day. I would argue that Matt offers a focal point, occupies centre backs and is a threat at set pieces (when attacking and also useful when defending, late in the game).

We have to manage his minutes and his hard yards. This partly explains the Draper loan deal, I feel because he has the youthful exuberance to run all day, though not necessarily the experience to pick a run. That is why players that can deliver a decent cross are so important to this side being successful.

Hussey, Hutch and Earing (and maybe Milan?) can all do a job but imagine if we could get Liam Bennett. The whole dynamic of the team improves so much and he is a player that would integrate into the squad immediately.

Me taking the piss  Yellow Card for Scoobs.

I couldn’t make today due to work. Seen a lot said about most players but hardly anything about draper? How did he look playing up there with dj?

I’m very pleased that we kept our shape in midfield and I’m sure it frustrated Villa. I think Sadler got the mix just right and avoided the mind numbing tactics of Flynn and yet getting the effect that Flynn would have sold his mother for.
