Witton would have been nearer! Family legend had it that he would arrange for his engine to develop a fault when passing Fellows Park on a Saturday afternoon but Iā€™m sure thatā€™s not true. I do remember though him and his fireman appearing in our back garden when I was a nipper, because his train was held up on its journey to Aldridge brickworks by a points failure, and they decided to walk over the fields between our house and the railway line for a cup of tea from my mom. That and me ā€œdrivingā€ a train in the sidings at Bescot are two of my earliest memories.

Good memories thoseā€¦I was a train spotter as a kid and loved going to Ryecroft and Bescot to get the numbers. Later went further afield like Shrewsbury, Leicester and a wonderful day at York when I was a teenager.

Quite possibly my grandad would have retired in 1961. One person he did know from there was Ken Hill, who played for us in the late 50s and early 60s.

Very neat & tidy player Ken we had some cracking half backs as they were know in those days .alongside the most famous Albert who will probably ever play for us .
