Birmingham (A) - FL Trophy - Tuesday 3rd September 7.45pm

Not by me. Easily the most annoying set of fans out there. Localised glory hunting.

I particularly detest the sort Villa fan that bangs on about supporting his local club to anyone that listens, then drives past three grounds on his way to a match.

Oh same for me, I probably dislike Villa more than the Blues fans!

I grew up in Pelsall and there were a handful of Walsall fans then mostly Villa, constantly taking the piss, which never bothered me much cos I went to the games and they didn’t.

I’ve got friends who support all the local clubs, but no Villa, I’ve never met one I liked enough to be mates with.

There’s still a few of us desperately holding the fort!

Not a place I really go now. I haven’t lived there for 30 years and my Dad has been gone 17. I assume not much has changed there though. Rushall is worse for Villa too, or it used to be anyway.

Must say, i thought the safe standing is great. Especially as we could pick where we stand. Would love it at the bescot

Just watched the highlights.
Some excellent penalties and two decent saves. Should give Sam confidence going into the weekend.

I’d heard that Cleary was a big lad, but didn’t think he was that big.

Has Tom Brady not got enough cash to switch the lights on?

Derailing slightly back to the game itself, one of the most impressive things for me was that at no stage did Blues look like creating a clear cut chance. Yes they had loads of the ball, and yes the put a number of good crosses into the box, but we got on the end of pretty much everything.

We didn’t just sit in and look to soak up pressure though, we were a genuine threat going forward and it’s nice that we’ve got more than one way of playing and able to churn out results.

Half of that team last night (7 out of the 14 who represented us) have yet to make 20 league appearances apiece.

Williams, Barratt, Weir, Maher, Lowe, Jellis and Cleary.

Many of those appearances for Lowe, Maher and Williams have been as substitute.

Credit Sadler for giving them their chance.

Credit also to the club for their recruitment.

I was sat in the blues end yesterday as my mate (blues fan) sorted me a ticket. I must say you Saddlers made an unbelievable amount of noise, was with my 4 pals who’ve never understood the thing of me supporting Walsall, there all supporters of other midlands clubs and yesterday you supporters showed them exactly why I’m a Walsall fan! The comments I got following the match about the way we played, the way we sang! They was just impressed with everything. I must also say being sat away from you all instead of being in and amongst it usually, the roar and jubilation that went up was something else! You Reds!

I thought Lowe helped a lot with us being able to offer a threat going forward. Nothing against Matt, he does a good job for us when he plays, but Lowe is a lot more dynamic and increased the speed of our attacks. The midfield also do a good job of getting forward quickly, and the goal Lakin scored is exactly the kind of goal I was expecting him to score for us when he signed, arriving in the box or the edge of it at just the right time.

We do appear far more well drilled than we did at any point last season. Having better players obviously helps. Being able to bring a player like Jellis off the bench without really weakening the midfield is great, but there has obviously been a lot of work done in that area of our game.

Completely agree. I think Lowe’s mobility is a major asset and makes him much more than just a target man. He’s not just a carbon Copy of Matt which means he can play alongside him rather than being a replacement for him.

I really hope that some stop the comparison between Lakin and Hutch as they are completely different players. Lakin on the left gives us far better balance (coupled with Allen and Gordon/Weir), and where he won’t provide as many goals or assists as Hutch did, he’ll contribute more to the overall functionality of the team.

Lowe is a cracking signing, but he’s still raw, so let’s not pin too much hope and expectation on him.

At 18 he shouldn’t be playing every game, and he needs to keep progressing on his decision making - example last night was where he was virtually one on one with a defender and their keeper was miles out, had he either rifled it or tried to bend it inside the post the keeper would have had no chance, but he delayed and then hit a cross cum shot that went miles wide.

Hopefully the likes of Byfield, and even DJ, can teach him though, and he’ll be some player in 2 or 3 years.

He won’t be our player then though, I want us to get maximum out of him this season to support our top 7 push (granted he did look tired but with DJ returning to the bench it’s great to have five options up top).

He should consider himself lucky there’s usually no delaying mine.

I’ll admit it: I was worried when we got to 10th August with Jamma and Josh as our only two fit strikers. I would have liked to have seen another permanent striker brought in, but Lowe and Cleary look decent additions. We need to keep the momentum going and still be there or thereabouts come January. I actually feel that I want to go to matches now, rather than feel I should. And fair play to Mat: I think he’s a good guy, who is obviously getting the players playing for him. I hope he gets us up.

Not much mention of DJ being on the bench last night. Even if he’s not ready, it’s good to have him back involved
