Don’t think Ken Armstrong counts as he didn’t play for both clubs :unamused:

Was this just about saving money or was there something more sinister behind the idea?

It was more for Blues benefit - they were in dire trouble at the time, but Wheldon did keep them going.

I believe a few years earlier he’d also suggested a ground share with the Dingles.

Remember that time and think Weldon did consider a ground share with blues and wolves. It was an idea that was around at the time as many clubs were in trouble and looking at ways of cutting costs. I think Charlton moved out of the Valley and shared with Palace and Bristol Rovers moved out of Eastville and shared with Bath City. Think it was around that time but it was a long time ago. Of course our supporters resisted this as we could see our club disappearing/being swallowed up by our bigger neighbours. Weldon lost any respect he may have had and there was no way back for him.

I read some of the SWAG stuff intended for Ramsden at the time. Walsall were in much better shape financially and it speculated that the plan was for Walsall to buy St Andrews. It could then have been bought back for a pittance later.

Wasn’t Mrs Wheldon the official owner of WFC at the time?
Something to do with Football league rules, which said that Ken couldn’t own two clubs?

I could be completely wrong with this!

That’s what I remember

Bit of a funny one the Weldon era think he always had an eye on a bigger picture sort of Sullivan/Gold was a businessman at heart looking to make money proper scrap man .

Depends on you pronunciation .

There for the taking

Lots of cup finals in the third division with both Blues and Wrexham fans claiming every game against them is everybody else’s cup final.

Usually an excuse that surfaces during the season rather than pre-season. The inference being that everybody tries that bit harder against “massive” clubs.

The Ken Armstrong deal was done solely to save Birmingham city

But with wheldon being the astute business man he was. He Knew it would also bring Walsall three times the amount they paid for him. When the FA paid out the insurance claim

Many people think he. tried to rip Walsall. off with that transfer. In fact, it was the polar opposite he greatly benefited both clubs And in fact, the transfer fee paid by the saddlers . Saved Birmingham city from going bankrupt
