Cambridge United (A) - Sat 6th March, 3pm

Incredible naivety.

If we perform like that every week we’ll win another handful of games. There were green shoots of decent play there

@Exile Can you please speak to this “gentleman”?

Thanks in advance.

Disagree. Not all positions in football were created equal, just as there is a hierarchy of importance in sports such as American football (quarterback first and a long gap to second), basketball (guards are the key players) and rugby league (in a salary capped competition the smart coaches prioritise fullback, five-eighth, halfback and hooker over the other spots). Promotion-winning football teams have good spines: goalkeeper, stopper, playmaker and striker.

Guthrie was here 18 months and was never match fit. Being able to play 90 minutes week in, week out is a pre-requisite for a professional footballer. It’s their job FFS.

Got me thinking about some of the great left backs we’ve had actually. Aranalde, Padula, Fox, Henry … Leahy. Great players. Dunno what sparked it :man_shrugging:

Saturday evening joke: How many trolls does it take to ruin UTS?

Answer: One.

It’s bad enough having to put up with the ■■■■ on the pitch :joy:

A massively improved performance on previous games but let’s be honest that ain’t hard considering how poor we have been. Just lacking composure in the final third I thought we got in some great positions just let down by the final ball. It was good to see Dutton sticking to the same formation for the whole game. I’d be more than happy for dutton to get the job full time if we continue from where we left of today.

Exactly I don’t know why people argue against the fundamentals.

When you have a strict cash limit, you have to prioritise within that cash limit.

It isn’t Man City where you are able to buy the best in every position.

It’s obvious that there will be a massive change of personnel in the summer and there aren’t many that I’d want to keep. Roberts, Rose, Norman, Melbourne, Bates, Perry, Kinsella, Holden and Wright (and possibly Nolan) are probably about it. The rest are very average. We must get the spine right: we need a couple of decent centre-halves, a box-to-box midfielder and a couple of decent strikers. Player recruitment is absolutely critical. Tactics and formations are secondary if you have quality on the pitch as we are seeing at the moment.

Yeah you bring in the best you can

Don’t prioritise someone because they came from your youth team

You don’t understand what your saying half the time

In recent seasons aswell it seems to be the one position (other than keeper pre Robbo) where club either get lucky or scout well.

Laird did well in 16/17 as short term Rico replacement (we won’t mention his second spell) and Pring did fine last year and now regular at higher level and I liked Nurse aswell and shame he got an injury when in good form. I take it he hasn’t played much for Bristol since he went back.

I think it was to do with his injury, they wanted him treated there as he kept picking up niggles. Shame as I really liked him too.

In my humble opinion, Rory Holden is Walsall’s only League One-quality player. Everyone else is League Two standard or worse. I think Liam Kinsella was man of the match today, but I would still get rid of him. Any game in which he is MotM is a bad game. Frankly amazed at the positivity of most posters after today’s match, which was a terrible advertisement for professional football.

I’ve been thinking about leaving this forum because of posters like yourself which would be a shame as there are a lot of reasonable rational people on here whose enjoyment of a balanced discussion is spoit by a few people like you , you really should look at the definition of forum .
Not that you will take any notice but for your information I have been involved with football at a high level for nigh on 50 years including until very recently being a paid employee of one of our illustrious Premier League clubs in the recruitment department., so I really don’t think I need to be told how to suck eggs by someone like you .

Can you not leave me alone, you self assessed over qualified passive aggressive little Troll?!

Completly obsessed…

I begrudgingly watched the game and I must say that we were solid and grafted well. The formation makes us better defensively. Melbourne is a good player. Thought White, although awkward, played well in that right-sided CB slot. Kinsella and Perry did ok. Gordon and Lavery, for all of their ‘huff and puff’ are not the answer to a regular goalscorer. We need a result Friday. Big time.

Id agree with those to keep… not wright though. Id swap that with signing up Sadler on another year.

A real sickener to lose in added time of stoppage time, particularly to Cambridge’s only on-target shot of the match! Should have been 3 points today as Cambridge were there for the taking. Paul Mullin’s 25th goal of the season just emphasised the difference between the teams, though.

We are totally powder-puff up front, although Osadebe, Wright and Gordon did go close, to be fair. We are woefully lacking in physical presence in midfield and particularly in attack. Oh for a Randy Camel, “Bernie the Bolt” or a big George Kirby (Allan Clarke’s “minder”). Opposing centre-backs have such a relaxing time when playing us! We have two so-called central strikers - Lavery works hard but he is out of his depth - just not good enough while Gordon is just a pale shadow of his former self - too many touches on the ball and is slow to release it. It’s fair to say that if we could have swapped Lavery for Mullin, we would have won comfortably. Why did Clarke take Osei on loan, if neither he nor Dutton select him? Whoever is our manager, next season, has got to make a striker his top priority.
