Chesterfield (A) - League & playoff away leg

Or put a curtain around them like they do in oss racing

You’d struggle to get on-pitch execution through an FA vote  :skull_and_crossbones:

I can think of a few I’d like to nominate for that though. Injured or not

Something I noticed on Sunday but forgot to mention.

All season long, as far as I can remember, when defending a corner we have never left anyone forward.

One time on Sunday, George Hall stayed up when we were defending a corner. A bit random. I didn’t notice anything specific that made him do this, unless he just ignored Sadler’s instructions!

They looked fairly dangerous on corners there was a stretch in the first half when they won every first contact with a high arched corner to the back post

I didn’t actually notice this but it’s something I’ve mentioned the other day.

I’ve been to many fans forums where it’s been questioned over the years and managers have said it’s fine due to wanting more bodies in the box to defend.

So many goals have been conceded from not clearing our lines and then the opposition having a shot from outside the box that trickles in or deflects.

Sometimes too many chefs spoil the broth as they say, and George Hall is the perfect player to stick on the halfway line. He’s someone who has a change of pace and a bit of trickery to turn away from the last man/men and start a decent counter attack, and open up the potential to a red card if the defenders get it wrong.

I’m guessing he didn’t just have 1 defender man marking him either?

I think two stayed back.

I didn’t notice initially, it was my Son who mentioned it. I am sure it only happened once in the game, and I can’t remember another time in the season when we have done it. Strange.

I totally agree with your points. Having one player forward to at least challenge and chase for clearances is probably more benefit than having all players back, especially as some don’t offer much more than being a body back when it comes to defending.

Edit.

To add, it was in the second half definitely, so we were winning at the time.

And of course having that outlet means they can’t commit so many in the box themselves and so is more effective at taking out an attacking player from being able to attack that corner than having someone like Hall trying to out jump a 6ft 4" CB that has hone forward for it.

With all the tv cameras about now,if it can be proven that there was no or very little contact by watching the replay then players should be sent off and banned for 10 games. If a keeper takes more than 10 seconds to bring the ball back into play without good reason then the ref should give a corner. I do like the fact that refs are way more lenient with physical contact, it must be working well going by how much Jamma moans and whines after every contact but one of the things I hate is the extent referees allow opposing teams to rip each other to bits at corners in the six yard box. I think attacking players would be more effective if they stood on the edge of the area and all ran in as the ball comes over.

Eagle eyed from him fair play! Makes sense for them to have 2 back. If Hall turns past the 1 then at least they have cover and it’s more likely to be a booking not a red.

We’ve had 11 men back for defensive corners for years to my knowledge.

Didn’t one team leave 3 up against us last season? Can’t remember who

Newport this season,

It’s something I never understand why we don’t do it especially with someone of his speed and stature

Im a Levi fan. Hes young. Hes hungry. Huge effort from him when he comes on and hes scored 3 goals. If he started the season he might well have got 8 or 9. I dont think its fair fans criticise him. Keep him and ditch the useless Doug Taylor and Josh Gordon.

Well done Levi !!!

I’d class him as a rough diamond .

Very raw , very unpolished . But ….

100% I can see why we took a punt on him .

Things “ happen” when he’s on … good and bad !!

I think your post sums up Levi perfectly. Hes basically played most of his games in the NL north. 100 pct I can see why we signed him

Still buzzing from last night, we looked controlled, really on it and worked hard.

Automatic promotion would have been boring anyway :joy:

Brilliant night last night even though it shouldn’t of been happening with the position we were in Dec/Jan but that’s all water under the bridge for now.

Think the club will be punished for the fans that invaded the pitch prematurely, and the smoke bombs/ flares that were being thrown around.I understand the excitement but it could be very costly, and could of cost us the game if it had been abandoned if Chesterfield players had refused to come back out onto the pitch to resume the last few minutes of the game.

Fair play to Cook as he had some abuse during the game, but actually he showed a bit of class by going into the Walsall changing room after the game and giving our team some praise. Both his interviews were very honest and no sour grapes from their side, even though during the games I don’t know how he never had a cardiac arrest. I must admit though even if he is a scouser, if he was available as our next manager I wouldn’t say no.

I thought the pitch invasion spoilt the teams glory a little if I’m perfectly honest as the whole atmosphere changed when it happened. People in the stands were screaming for them to leave the pitch so the game could continue and then everyone could of celebrated together with the team.

As I said we should never of been playing these games after the position we were in, but now we’re in the final at Wembley I hope we come away with the result and go up through the playoffs as we did at the Millenium Stadium, with mainly Walsall supporters backing the team, hope we don’t have loads of local club support, i.e Vile, dog heads, bag ladies, blue noses etc … that is unless they are going to change their colours and become fully fledged Walsall supporters from then on.
