Darrell Clarke confirmed as manager

Excellent appointment and proof that they do still care about the football side of the business. Not the cheap appointment so many were predicting.

As for retaining players, I would think he has pretty good knowledge of the players anyway, from an opposition point of view. Now he just needs to work out their characters.

And, of course, rovers have just released some interesting players, and he might persuade them to come to Walsall

Some Goood points there mate especially in regards to the coaching … which at our level is imperative. :+1:

I’m happy with that. Good record, ambitious and hungry, experience aplenty.

This an excellent appointment, fair play for getting him in. Now we must give him more than a piece of string to do it.

Young and experienced (over 400 games as manager)
Won promotion four times in eight years
Plays attacking football
Expects players to give their all
Always changes formations (L1 Ranieri he was called)
Highest coaching badge possible

He will do for me. Welcome Darrell.

Solid appointment. Cant knock Uncle Jeff over this one, but he will still only be as good as the budget he is given.

Good appointment, positive move by the board. Darrell highly regarded in my neck of the woods.

But wouldn’t it be great if Jeff had also announced a rent break to support Darrell in his quest to return us to the 3rd tier.

Exactly. If we have a mid table budget and we perform to mid table standards people will soon be on his back like they have been other managers when there is more at play.

Agree. Potentially a fantastic appointment, but needs a competitive budget.

On the face of it quite a good appointment, quite pleased.
I was only saying to a fellow saddler (in the swimming baths, rather weirdly) yesterday how I thought our next manager needed to have proper coaching badges for a change, so that’s a tick in the box.
Does anyone know if he does plumbing on the side? Might have been the deal clincher - just saying…

If he can fix the leaky defence I’ll put up with the leaky bogs!

I’m happy with his appointment and don’t want to be down beat but frankly, you can have a Ferrari but if you fill it up with dishwater, it’ll not get far (at any speed) so as is being said elsewhere, lets see what he has at his disposal from upstairs before we start to jump up and down all excited

Pleased and surprised with this appointment, I was expecting John from the Bescot McDonalds to get the job.

From speaking to a couple of mates of mine who are Rovers fans they say he did his best work when he was on a shoe string budget and that he started to go wrong when he had a bit of money to spend. Also sounds like he’ll bring attacking football and try to keep the ball on the ground.

Happy with that appointment

What a great head of hair he has…

Very happy with this appointment. Good pedigree, proven results and can hopefully help us challenge towards the right end of League Two…

For a bit more insight, the excellent Not The Top 20 podcast conducted an in-depth interview with Clarke shortly after he was sacked at Rovers, about his career to date, style etc. Interesting listen…

Just listening to this now.

He describes Hartlepool as “Proper Town”. I think he will like Walsall then.

It’s usually half a piece of string!

Cautiously optimistic, seems well loved at the Gas and certainly has experience with promotion. At the end of the day, the club still have to match his ambition or it doesn’t matter who is in charge.

Well done to them for getting someone in soon though.

Still Bonser, Mole and Gamble out.

Looks a good move just hope Jeff gives him funds to do the job and get us back were we should be back in the old 3rd division LOL.
