Expectations For The 2024/25 Season

As the discussion in the transfer thread was ruining the enjoyment of the site for others, here’s a thread to discuss the upcoming season.

To kick things off, personally, I think we look midtable at the moment and need to add more goals to the side, but that’s just my opinion (I think I may have already mentioned that, but can’t be sure).

I’m interested in the views of others who think this isn’t an issue - especially any views on why (who do they expect to score more than usual, reasons we’ll be better at the back or whatever else they think).

While I think we look set for 12-16th, I do think we should be targeting being in the top 7 all season, so I’m hopeful that we bring in a few more bodies to make that happen.

Maintaining being 7th or higher should be the aim this season, no more 17th in November, which means we have to play catch up in the second half of the season.

Another season where we get to the 3rd round of the FA Cup

Also, it would be nice to go further in the BSM Cup

Need a much better away form this season

Keep a maintained side throughout the season, hopefully will help with less long term injuries, which would make us more consistent

Continue to develop young players, feel like it’s a big season for the likes of Ronan Maher

Top 7 for me, no question.

Anything else and it’s a failure and a red flag.

If we have a bad start the pressure will be on Sadler and Trivela, listening to all the interviews top 7 is what the hierarchy will be expecting. With the current squad i would say 12-18 is where we are at at the moment,

Directly off the back of last season, top 7. We were well in with a shout a bottled it when it came to crunch time. Some fine tweaking of the squad with a few characters coming in who have been in promotion chasing sides was my expectation this window.

That expectation has now changed and I think we’ll be mid table fodder unless we bring in some real quality, and more importantly, goals. Granted, 11th is pretty much mid table, but we were in with a genuine shout up until the last week or so. This time, without improvements we’ll be out of any promotion race well before

We currently look set for a mid table finish at best . 3or4 quality additions turns us into serious playoff contenders or better .
Over to you trevela how much do they want to get out this league is the big question for me ?

I say aiming for top 7

As it stands I say the following sides look better placed for promotion than us

Mk Dons
Doncaster
Port Vale
Gillingham
Wimbledon

And then Chesterfield, Bradford, Salford and Carlisle a bit of an unknown.

I’m expecting a better defence and the same or better goals. That’ll give us top seven, and I think it’s fair to say that’s a minimum. We need to see progress and the increment of improvement has to be bigger.

Play offs as a minimum. Nothing else is acceptable

The current squad is pretty much the same as the one that fell away quite badly in the last few games of the previous season. There are additions of course and no doubt more to be added in key areas.
After our best finish since we have been in L2 further progress is absolutely essential for the new season.
Hopefully we can make a winning start and stay in the top seven throughout the new campaign.
As it stands I honestly can’t see us being top three but you never know. Here’s hoping.

Top 7 but at this very moment I don’t think we have enough to do it.

As we sit here today - I think this squad is the same, and if not worse than last year.

These next signings really need to kick us on. Not just relying on inexperienced loans… proper quality players. I just don’t think we will.

Top 7 is the minimum for next season - anything else is a failure.

Got to be top 7, we need to get out of this god awful league before Man City are relegated to it!

Like you Thanny I don’t think we will sign what we need to kick on, and I guess like you I’m not doom mongering either.Maybe it’s just our history as a club when it comes to this time of year and the same conversations are had every year with the same people saying things like this being proven right come the end of the season.Trivela have delivered off the pitch but now it’s time to deliver on it for me.The only signing I’ve been happy with is the lad that was at Sutton on loan last season Lakin because his numbers in a poor side over half a season look promising, the rest are pretty much unproven in the football league and the others are what we had last season.

With fhe squad we have, we’re looking at lower mid table at best.

A young, inexperienced keeper as number 1 is a risk (but could work, like Rushworth did)

Pretty much the same defence that shipped 70+ goals last season.

A weaker midfield after losing Hutch.

A strikeforce consisting of an aging, less mobile Jamille Matt, a ‘runs a lot’ but can’t score Josh Gordon, and an out of favour DJ.

Same squad, same tactics, same manager=same results

I hope they get hammered.115 counts of rule breaking so surely they’ll be hit like Rangers were and was it Juventus?

What I expect is for the vocal minority to make a huge thing of any poor result on the first two months and to try and build a momentum for removing the manager that will enhance their desire for their negativity bias to be proved correct……

What I hope for is for fans to realise that the season is 40 weeks, 9 months and 46 games long and within that their will be some spells of good form and some spells of poor form and we have little to no control over when those spells occur and it’s largely in the lap of the gods in terms of yours and others teams injuries / suspensions and whether playing opposition coincides with their own good or bad form spells……I lost count last season of the times we played a poor team who were currently top of the form table when it came to playing us!!!

I think the above will be helped if we see more evidence of positive change in terms of style and game control. There’s a huge difference in fan reaction to playing poorly and losing and playing well and losing….(obviously)….but I think in the main patience will be far more evident on the back of a more positive approach to style and performance.

IMO top 3 isn’t in the equation. The division will be more competitive than last season with more teams capable of putting runs together and beating each other.

I anticipate a lower points total being needed for top 3 and top 7 than previous years due to more teams beating each other….

My expectation for a manager coming into Walsall, at the point when Sadler did, when so many things needed putting in place aside from a 1st team that was short on quality would be to get out of the division in 3 seasons.

Season 1 was hit and miss on the pitch but made big strides off it. The flirt with the play offs was only ever a flirt and wasn’t ever a solid tilt at it. Whilst we fell short in the last week of the season, I think most realists will have seen over the previous weeks that we didn’t possess either the consistency or the overall quality to really maintain it and get over the line.

That said, it was a possibility and we were “in the mix” and I don’t care what anyone says, imo we were a million times better than the previous campaign.

To progress from that point, for me, would be a solid tilt. One of the teams in the mix for play offs and a serious contender among many (8/9 other serious contenders).

The final analysis will be very much based on some good fortune at the right times and being able to exploit those opportunities.

If we can compete in the play offs, give it a real go I think the following season will be the one where I’d have a real expectation of automatic promotion.

What do we still need?

Goals. Simple as that.

I have no problem with the quality of the likes of DD, PF, OM - if they stay fit. I think the defensive attributes of many of our players individually is just fine and staying injury free and continuity will be key to being a good defensive unit.

Goals from midfield are as much a worry as those from the forwards for me.

I think players like JG and JM will out score their previous seasons (not hard I grant you) so that’s a bonus but some are guilty of underestimating just how unique and sought after double figures for goals and assists from a CM is and just how hard it is to replace……we will need Lakin / Earing / Stirk all to hit 5/6 each to compensate.

I stood up and clapped this paragraph. I absolutely agree.

The reason I am so pessimistic (or realistic ?) is the style of football.

I’ve obviously been in favour of getting rid of Sadler at times last season, but don’t have any opinion either way about him being in charge at this point.

If he looks like the best bet for getting us promoted and the signs are there (even if the results aren’t exactly right) then I’m 100% behind him.

This is the key thing for me, if the playing style is better, control improves and we can see patterns of play going forward and look well drilled at the back then I’m happy.

I judge it based on 3 things - results, the data and the eye test. If results are good then I don’t care about the other 2. If they’re not then I look at the other 2 to work out if they’re likely to improve. If I don’t think they are, then I’m all for changing the manager.

For now though, it’s pre-season and we need to back him and ‘trust the process’ a bit.

Clubs who’s genuine aim it is to win promotion, and progress to become established at a higher level will obviously target top 3. That should be the aim, and if we fall short and end up in the play offs, then a second chance materialises. The time to target top 7 is when you’re mid-table with 10 games to go.
