Floodlights

How poor are the new floodlights. On Tuesday you could see players from both teams shielding their eyes when the ball was up in the air.

Very poor from who ever installed them.

The highlights you can see patches all over the pitch.

Trotters independent traders got the contract I think, due to their links with uncle Albert.

I thought it was a problem with the camera lighting, as it seemed variable throughout the match.
Obviously not as people who attended the game are also saying it was cack.

It’s surprising that someone at the club saw the job the contractor had done and signed it off as finished. I think the most likely explanation is that the contractor said " well we can get it a lot better, but it’ll cost ya". And the club said " no that’ll have to do".

Remember the “deep clean” of the stadium before re-opening after Covid? Mole bragged on a video about how they’d made sure the whole stadium had been covered. Then when fans started attending quite a few areas were still grimey and bird poo on seats so hasn’t been cleaned.
Clearly hadn’t been inspected and checked before it was signed off as being done.

Not an expert in floodlighting, especially sports lighting which is its own speciality but have some background in this field. I imagine the actual light levels on the surface have increased quite considerably however they have used the existing column positions which has limited the design. They have angled them to try and throw as much light in the middle of the pitch which has made them quite glarey for want of a better word. As LED’s are much more direct and less diffuse than an old SON lamp, you’ll get much brighter patches which probably means a less uniform spread of light than the previous installation. It therefore gives the appearance of dark patches when in reality it’s a better level than before.

I’m sure there’s someone with more knowledge than me to tell me I’m chatting rubbish but that’s my two cents.

If I remember correctly the new lights had to be checked by the EFL to verify that the light levels all over the pitch had to meet the league minimum. This is the case for all new floodlight installations. Also we had to have them upgraded because the old ones didn’t meet the new regulations.

It was signed off in the daytime.

Well I have not noticed players shielding their eyes and the floodlights seem better,
but what do I know.

From the EFL handbook:

PART 2 - FLOODLIGHTING
1.1 The average lux value of the floodlights, obtained from 88 readings taken on the grid
system provided by The League, must meet the following minimum criteria for each
division:

League One and Two: Average Lux Value 500 Minimum at any one point 300

1.2 In order to assess the lux value, a series of 88 readings must be taken with a light
meter on a grid pattern set out on the pitch at approximately 10 metres apart. The light
meter must be placed on a horizontal plane at pitch level and the average of all the
readings is taken to be the average lux value of the floodlights.

1.3 The readings must be carried out by a qualified neutral surveyor, specialist contractor
and/or a manufacturer. The League shall require a test certificate and chart to be
submitted within 14 days of the date of the test and in any event no later than 30
November (with the test having been conducted after 1 July).
1.4 Any Club which fails to deliver a test certificate as required shall be guilty of
misconduct. In addition to any penalties imposed, The League may arrange to have
an inspection carried out and the cost of the inspection shall be borne by the Club.

Guidance
Although the League will try to notify Clubs in advance of the expiry of their current
floodlight report, it is ultimately the Club’s responsibility to ensure that a Floodlight
Test Report is submitted to the League every year in accordance with Regulations.
Each Club shall ensure that the floodlighting installation and supporting services at its
ground are properly designed and maintained so as to continue to meet the criteria
set out in this part of this Appendix.
