Is 5,000 our glass ceiling?

Seeing far too many chesterfield fans mocking the attendance, weren’t long back they were averaging 4,000 odd. Never been much bigger than us if at all.

Their support was shite n all, good numbers all standing but barely any noise

Think we’d have to be 25 points clear of 4th by that point

Chesterfield can mock all they like and have short memories. The fact we more often than not have regularly got the better of them over the last 30 or 40 years and had a number of promotions to Div 2/Championship in that time (when they have had none) is far more important than the fact they average 2.5k more at present.

Frankly, they have been rubbish for years now and think winning the NL is the pinnacle of success. Bunch of bad losers too.

In the shadows of well supported Derby and the 2 Sheffield teams they do have an odd (we’re bigger than you mentality when it suits them…)

Loved it when we gave them a dose of ‘Top o the league - we’re having a laugh….’

Just charge a cock and hen .hey

Think they were in shock at the state of their right back in the second half :joy:

Also found it strange they seemed to think they were some sort of big club, spose they were in Vanarama…

Odd as fk, past few years they’ve had better home gates but historically we are almost identical

I thought they were rubbish too. Another example of NL success leaving new-wave fans with an elevated opinion of themselves.

But I love the old rivalries best

Yeah I did think of that game for the reasons you outline. However it is on Easter Friday so club might decide the uniqueness of that day in Football schedule creates bigger walk up demand than if that was on a Saturday 3pm and they don’t need to create any offers.

Of course Easter Friday is also the latest in the season it can be this time so with I think three games left are it might actually be the promotion game.

Won’t be anything for Vale for same reasons as will surely get 7k + for that. Wimbledon at home might be one to look at as that’s on Sat 29th and there won’t be as many local games around as it’s FA Cup QFs. Also probably won’t have played for 16 days at that point so others might have closed in.

Wimbledon game won’t be moved as it will still fall in international week so club can just request that actually gets postponed like I presume they will for Gillingham away if the expected call ups happen.

It going to half 12 on the Saturday is far far more likely.

I agree. The rivalry with Chesterfield was particularly intense in the mid to late 70’s into the early 80’s. It re-emerged in the mid 90’s in the Chris Nicholl promotion season and continued after we both got promoted for a few years. I think it was Chesterfield at home when Martin O’Connor fell out of the stretcher when being carried off with an injury. It featured on ‘Question of Sport’ if I remember rightly (we won 3-0).

Their cup run to the FA Cup semi-final was pretty impressive in 96/97. I think Sean Dyche was in their defence at the time with Kevin Davies up front.

Didn’t our squad send chesterfield a postcard from a celebration holiday after the Bury promotion evening telling them to enjoy the playoffs? I enjoyed that season

We were discussing the rivalry with Chesterfield the other day, may have been on this thread, not sure.

There were a few trying to deny it ever existed. I am glad I’m not losing my marbles and others do remember it.

They were robbed in that semi final if I remember rightly… Shame :joy:

Being a football fan means that you can justifiably have a grudge against so many others without the harm that it does in so many other ways. The challenge would be to work out which teams you don’t actually dislike. Cathartic

Were they in the FA Cup semi final - they never mention it

Do they mention it more or less often than we mention our semi-final?

More I think but not as often as Blackburn fans mention 1995, and certainly not as many times as Villa mention 1982.

Speaking of glass ceilings and in light of something @P.T might get onboard with would be the removal of our roof / stanchions and replace with this unique design from New Zealand…

Obviously on a much smaller scale, probably cheaper in the long run and much nicer to sit in during our dire winters as the climate changes.

Atmosphere would be very loud, bird crap might be a pain however… UKs first ‘indoor’ football stadium…

Also we would blend in with the retail park!

Love it. It’s the future.

Cover it in Poundland livery and it’s a gimme. Especially if we use Poundlands own cling film to do the roof/windows.
