Mulling this over, if all League 1 and 2 teams - in other words our competition - all get the same ‘incentive’, then it’s not significantly advantageous to any of them is it?
I remember reading on here that the prize money for the knockout section of the Papa John’s is higher than it is in the League Cup, by which time you’d expect most of the Under 21s to be out anyway. If there is an exceptional Under 21s team which progresses far into the tournament, they’ve probably been assembled on millions in the first place. Who does any of this benefit?
Maybe all this has already been said. There’s nothing anyone can do about it.
Indeed, that makes good sense in isolation. I’m more looking at it from the perspective of it not being much of an advantage, however it’s spent, if the rest of our competition get it too. It being a competition, we only win where others lose. That’s the nature of the monetary system in general, but that’s another story!
At what sporting cost does the ‘incentive’ come also? We’re participating in a match where one side has a limit imposed on it and the other doesn’t. That skews the whole event by devaluing victory for the unhandicapped and enhancing victory for the handicapped team. For me that’s a step away from sport.
