L 2-0 vs Bristol Rovers (A) – Tue 3rd Feb, 7.45pm (League Two)

The Saddlers travel to the Memorial Stadium….

The Opposition

Although starting off the season well, it all went downhill for Bristol after they were beaten 2-1 at the Bescot in October. Although going 1-0 in the first half, they were undone by an Aaaron Pressley brace late in the 2nd half.

In the 17 League games that have followed, they have only won twice and drawn once with the rest being losses. Darrell Clarke has been replaced by Steve Evans, but Rovers position still looks precarious in 21st and only 4 points away from the relegation spots. It should also be noted that their 2 wins have come against Shrewsbury Town (22nd) and Newport County (23rd)

The Proposition

The Saddlers are on a run of 3 draws, with the latest being a 2-2 draw away to Chesterfield. Walsall went down 2-0 in the first 20 mins before a change in tactics led to goals from Daniel Kanu and Albert Adomah to bring themselves level.

Bristol Rovers won 3-0 at home to Newport County in their last game, but had been on a run of three 1-0 losses prior.

The First Time

The first meeting between the sides, was in Division Three (South) with Bristol winning 5-2 at home.

The Last Time

The Saddlers last meeting with Chesterfield was the 2-1 win at Bescot on 4th October 2025 in League Two.

The Worst Time

On 28th April 1952, the Saddlers fell to a 5-1 away loss.

The Best Time

On 18th March 1986, the Saddlers won 6-0 at Fellows Park in a League Division Three game.

Played for both

Ellis Harrison plays as a centre-forward for Bristol Rovers. He represented Wales at under-21 level, scoring three goals in 14 games.

Harrison began his career at Bristol Rovers, making his senior debut at 17 in April 2011. He scored twenty goals in forty matches as Rovers secured promotion into the English Football League through the Conference Premier play-offs in the 2014–15 season, including a goal in the play-off final.

He was briefly loaned out to Hartlepool United in the 2015–16 campaign, though he would score eight goals for Rovers as they secured promotion out of League Two. He then scored twenty goals at League One level throughout the next two seasons, securing a £750,000 transfer move to Ipswich Town in July 2018.

However, he scored just one goal for the Championship club and returned to League One on a £450,000 transfer to Portsmouth in June 2019. He scored 20 goals in 84 games for the club before joining Fleetwood Town for an undisclosed fee in January 2022.

He moved on to Port Vale for another undisclosed fee eight months later. He finished as Vale’s top-scorer in the 2022–23 season and was sold on to Milton Keynes Dons in September 2023.

He was loaned to Walsall in February 2025.

He rejoined Bristol Rovers in July 2025.

Also:

Only thing certain about this game is that Matt will be Captain & upfront again.

Will Sadler actually play some of our oldnew guys? No, of course he won’t, that would spoil his kick and rush football playground style of play. hoping for a lucky point from this one 1-1.

We tend to do better away from home so wouldn’t be surprised with a tight 1-0 win.

Back to winning ways tonight :+1:t2:

The referee for this one is Alex Chilowicz from London. He is a former American NFL official who moved to the UK in 2024.
He last officiated us only back on 2nd December 2025 in our 1-2 away victory at Stevenage in the Vertu Trophy. Proir to that he officiated our home 0-1 capitulation to Accrington in April 2025 in which he sent off Connor Barrett.
The last time he officiated Bristol Rovers was in August 2024, a 1-0 home win against Northampton Town.
Lets see how this one goes.

I honestly have no idea which Walsall is going to turn up. If the first thirty minutes at Chesterfield one lord help us, if it’s the other sixty plus minutes one lord help them.

Expecting a win. Anything less isn’t good enough. We need to keep up with the pack

The Memorial Ground

First opened in 1921, The Memorial Ground spent more than 40 years hosting a variety of events before becoming the home of Bristol Rovers in 1996. Since then, it has developed a reputation as a popular away day, offering visiting spectators a rare, old-fashioned matchday experience.

Away fans are typically housed along one side of the Poplar Terrace at The Mem. The open stand, positioned near the south-east corner flag, maintains the ground’s traditional feel and consists solely of standing accommodation for travelling supporters.

In poor weather conditions, away supporters may struggle to find shelter, as much of the away section is uncovered and offers little protection from the rain. On some occasions, however, a portion of the South Stand is allocated to travelling fans, providing covered seating and a welcome escape from the elements.

Staying true to its traditional feel, the Poplar Terrace offers a generally decent view of the pitch, although sightlines can be partially restricted by supporting pillars and nearby sections of the stadium. With The Memorial Ground holding just 12,500 spectators, away allocations are typically just over 1,000, which can make the away end feel cramped at times.

Away fans enter through turnstiles 24-26 when they are in the Poplar Terrace and turnstiles 27-29 when they are in the South Stand. This must be respected as turnstiles operators do not take kindly to visiting spectators trying to enter the arena in a different area to which their allocated seat belongs.

Bristol Rovers chants and cries

The fact that the majority of the Memorial Stadium is standing lends itself to a good atmosphere, and the club’s supporters certainly know how to make plenty of noise. Some of the Bristol Rovers chants that you can expect to hear on a trip to the Memorial Stadium include:

  • Goodnight, Irene

  • Blue army

  • Oh when the Gas go marching in

  • The Robins are bobbins (and we f*****g hate the c****)

  • We love your Rovers

  • Come on Rovers

Pubs for away spectators

There is a bar behind the clubhouse terrace at the ground that allows away supporters. Not far from the Memorial Stadium on Gloucester Road is The Wellington, a much-loved public house, well known for providing a fairly warm welcome, delicious food and good service.

Other nearby pubs include:

  • The Royal Oak – 385 Gloucester Rd, Horfield, Bristol BS7 8TR. FRIENDLY COMMUNITY PUB WITH SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

  • The Crafty Cow – 635 Gloucester Rd, Bristol BS7 0BJ. Hugely popular family pub that admits small amounts of well behaved away spectators.

  • The Drapers Arms – 447 Gloucester Rd, Bristol BS7 8TZ. Open from 5pm, Bristols very first ‘micro-pub’ , feel free to enjoy a nice pint free from electronic distractions.

Food and Drink

A wide variety of food and drink is available at the Memorial Ground including gourmet burgers (from £5.75) as below:

Also jumbo hot dogs (minimum 6 inches), hot pies and ready salted crisps.

Drinks include lager (£6), wine (£7) and bottled water (£4).

The weather is forecast to be exceptionally moist today, if you are travelling advice is for waterproofs (umbrella but NOT a golf umbrella, cagoule, waterproof hat, wellington boots).
