League Two 24/25 - The Other 23

3-2 now Donny it’s a goal spree only halftime

What has happened to Gillingham?

In the 9 league games since start of October they’ve won 1, drawn 1, lost 7.

They were flying at start of season.

Just had a peek on their fans forum. It’s almost as bad as Swindon’s.

This comnent seems to sum up the mood in Kent

Such a shame how far Swindon have regressed now, a traditional big club that is very well supported, its a travesty that they are stuck in this division and struggling so pitifully.

The football gods can be cruel.

Exactly what I was thinking. Their manager’s post match (Bromley) interview shows a guy who looks like he’s at the end of his tether.

Stirk does sometimes play like Kinsella did when he was at his best, winning countless man of the match awards and two player of the season awards. Stirk does not win possession of the ball as much as Kinsella used to, but he does get involved a lot.

I would agree that when Kinsella came back from injury he was not quite the player he had been before, but maybe he is returning to that form at Cheltenham. The belief that Stirk is some sort of great creative passer of the ball is not one that I share.

Agreed, think it’s more that he’ll make the odd forward pass, and have a shot every now and again that people see.

The amount of times he picks up the ball in space and plays it backwards, rather than turning and moving it forwards though shows his instincts.

He’s spelt Bonser wrong …

A lot less than Kinsella did. I remember one of the Covid games under DC that we had to watch on iFollow where the commentators both remarked just how much he and Alfie Bates were turning and taking possession facing our own goal rather than going the other way and putting us on the attack. He didn’t used to be like that so maybe it was something Clarke (and then Flynn) coached into him?

Oh he did - I’ve been saying for year and years and years about Kinsella being extremely limited.

Bit of a sliding doors with him - when he (it seems) decided he wasn’t a full back, but a midfielder. I think he would have had a good career in league one as a full back - but instead… the rest was history.

I just love this type of humour.

There does not seem to be any evidence to support that opinion.

Kinsella had opportunities as a full back, but never looked good enough in that role to keep his place in the team. If he had been a particularly good full back, one of the six managers he played under at Walsall would have made him in first choice in that position, but none of them did.

As a midfielder, he has made around 250 first team starts and was named player of the season for his club when we were in League One, and also both fans’ Player of the Season and the Players’ Player of the Season on another occasion. So if he never played another game, he has already had a good career as a midfielder, far more successful than most lower league players.

He was a really poor footballer if we take the red tinted lenses off.

Worked hard, but a good egg in a team of rotten ones. A symbol of the 10 years of decline.

I like Stirk, and I also liked Kinsella.
Kinsella would have been good in this midfield, as is Stirk
