Agreed. But all types of managers keep failing in the system as it is, including the one who did well at Vale.
Absolutely. I’m not saying the system doesn’t need to change (even if I am skeptical exactly how much impact that has), but we’ve been here before, making noises about top to bottom reform, bigger systems, root and branch approaches, Directors of Football, club wide philosophy and whatever other bullshit catchphrases people throw out.
Fullerton and Taylor.
If it is Sadler, the club have taken the cheap option and if we get off to a bad start the supporters will start to turn on Trivila
I don’t find being positive draining at all. I find positivity enthusing and energising.
What’s draining is constant negativity and looking for the things that could go wrong or may go wrong. It happens at times to all of us I get that, but that’s just me. I may end up being disappointed from time to time but being positive over seeing the worst, works for me every time.
What would you like to see?
Winning football.
As above. Sadler and Trivela are on a hiding to nothing with it. Fans will turn very very quickly on this one.
There were rumblings yesterday morning and unfortunately what Westie is saying is bang on. I’m not sure how he got his info, but it’s accurate. Fair play. I can’t see how it fits with what BB’s letter implied, and smacks of being blinded by the cheap, yes man option and having the wool pulled over his eyes by someone who is obviously a good talker. Time will tell, but this could go badly wrong.
Explain this to me.
Explain how he is the cheap option, with some knowledge into how much he’s worth paying, how much the other candidates wanted to be paid and let me know what sort of playing budget he accepted as acceptable compared to the other candidates, or how little he wanted invested into facilities, the academy, the staff around him in terms of analysts, medical, sports scientists etc
I’m interested in what people actually think they mean when they say “cheap option”.
Whoever is finally announced as Head Coach/Manager I think the club will perhaps find it more difficult/expensive to recruit the players we all crave to see , those who can for our level play football when called on. Bearing that in mind I wouldn’t be surprised to see the retained/released list looking mixed rather than a big clear out. That’ll be a pragmatic decision by the new chap I suggest and an indication that incremental improvements are what we have to accept with what patience we can muster
Sadler is the ‘cheap option’ as he is already employed by the club and will not command the salary of an proven manager like Alexander or a Cowley would. It is a very risky appointment if true as it screams of Taylor/Fullarton combo. I would be much more positive about it if ROK was by his side. But it could turn out to a great decision in the long run but it doesn’t scream of ambition.
Ye I don’t get how it’s a cheap option, managers at league 2 level are not paid all that great as it.
I’m guessing he would of earnt a hell of a lot more as a player.
I do not know if it will be Sadler or not but, of all the candidates, he seems to fit best with the vision in Boycott’s letter, Far from not being ambitious, I think it shows a real ambition to do things differently. Boycott was very clear he did not want another Clarke/Flynn type appointment, with an autonomous manager.
People call for a change at the top, for a new vision, and then complain when it happens.
Kind of hope that you are right.
Because it’s relative to a football manager not a player. That’s not an option to him anymore. He’s already taking a wage from the club it will cost them virtually nothing.
However, I don’t think he’s potentially been employed because he’s cheap, I think it’s because he’s familiar and the easy choice.
Heard this mentioned on here a couple of times, but never heard of a situation like this in football or the wider business world, so I’d take it with a massive pinch of salt.
I can’t envisage a situation where a managers contractual pay off with a club, if terminated early, would be contingent on that person getting another job.
That being said, I do suspect that the availability of the Swindon role (or the soon to be available role) possibly played a part in discussions to part ways, and may have meant a lesser pay off for Flynn. I imagine the Swindon role is better paying and more attractive to him being closer to home.
As for our manager - it’s getting a bit tetchy now with fans. If we end up appointing Sadler after a long process like this, then we’ll know something hasn’t quite gone to plan. I still don’t think it is going to be Sadler, but I do think we missed out on our first choice.
We know a positive ‘cultural shift’ is possible because we saw it under Smith. It’s only bullshit when it’s used as a hollow gesture to appease fans (as it has been and as it may be this time), or recruitment for key figures is appalling:
Exactly, my point is the bloke won’t work for pennies. I’m sure he has some self respect.
If Trivela have decided to appoint Mat Sadler, this must be because he was the only candidate who was prepared to promise in his interview that he would play the attractive, attacking football that they are looking for.
All the experienced candidates would know that whatever directors say in an interview, the only thing that matters to them is winning matches. Managers who have faced the ups and down of league football for a few seasons know that they will get the blame if the results turn against them, irrespective of how positive the team selection has been.
I didn’t mean bullshit as in can’t be true, I meant it as in its window dressing. It sounds great written on a letter, but cut to a 1-0 loss at home to Harrogate with players squaring up to fans and it all feels a little less important.
You can say that about Fullarton, why should we have any more confidence in the people setting up this “system”? A bloke who runs an investment company and a former MLS player who has no idea about this league? I’d have thought even more reason to bring in an experienced head to be honest.
