Nicknames

I recall the other player known as “Chopper” was Chopper Evans a full back.

Indeed he was but he was a pussycat compared to Bill Gutteridge.

He used to run with his hands sticking out sideways and all his fingers spread out like he was drying his nail varnish …

He was the one I meant in my post up the thread. I started watching in the early 70s, but I was told about the earlier Chopper, Bill Gutteridge.

Don’t think he was with us long enough to have a nickname but even at the end of his career Roger Hynd was more than a match for the two Choppers. Think some of us called him Gums due to a lack of his front teeth when playing.

I can’t think of a nickname for Roger, although I wonder if fellow players called him Shankly, or Shanks maybe.
He was built like a lot of the modern players are, with muscles. Many players from his era had thin legs and slight guts, but not Roger. Built like a brick outhouse, like a proper athlete.
I worked with a Blues fan a few years back, he’d been going to games since the early 50s and he put Roger in his top three favourite Blues players, along with Trevor the Boy Wonder and Bertie Auld.

Dave Robinson was known as “Sugar” . Mick Kearns could be heard at times calling it out. Sugar Ray Robinson., I suppose.

Following on from CH’s named Dave did others call Serella 'Cinders ’ ie Cinderella?

‘Youth’ nickname given to Garry Pendrey by Bucko.

Allan Baker known as ‘Bilko’ by his team mates he was the cards king the gambling school leader.

Was “The Gold un” to us.

Oh excellent. Never thought of that.

Could’ve been “Bee” ??

Maybe we should also point out that many of Chopper Gutteridge’s transgressions were due to miss-timing or, er, over-enthusiasm.
BTW, did Bernie Wright have a nickname? I recall certain fans shouting “Raw Meat” at him, but I always thought that this was a form of (not needed) encouragement for him to be aggressive, rather than a nickname.

Used to stand in the Cowshed and Bernie was known by a few as ‘The Bolt’ which older gits will remember came from the Golden Shot

Remember it all so well - now you’ve reminded me

As a cow shedder I can confirm he was known as “the bolt” by some of us and sometimes “gyppo”. which as I posted earlier was pinched from some away fans calling him that!!

Alun Evans was "scarface " to us lot.

And of course there was “Ena” Sharples.

I think I once heard that when Kelly went to West Ham, his nickname quickly became " Grace." Not a good move for him that. Especially when you think Bayern seems to have been an option.

I still can’t get over that snippet of news, from his interview. Did anyone know about the Bayern Munich interest?
