Old photos of Fellows Park

Shortly after that transfer Liverpool won 6-0 at Molineux and Evans scored one or maybe two and it was on MOTD. The Scousers sang “thank you very much for Alun Evans” which made me laugh.
I think the Wolves keeper that day might have been Alan Boswell.

You may be interested in reading this article. He did indeed score twice in that game…

Thanks.

I thought Evans was a brilliant player for us, when he was “on” but he was frustrating. At his best he could run any game, but he could also be totally anonymous, and was sometimes both within the 90 minutes.
Less talented players have had more glittering careers I suppose.

Never be forgotten for that great goal against Leicester in fa cup.

That was his best moment for us. Very late wasn’t it, 90th minute or thereabouts.
42 years ago this weekend, where’s the time gone? :grinning:

@Yorkred Yes what a strike by Evo that was… in the Fellows Park mud! Late in the game too.

And from another angle with Buck looking on.

That’s the bus I used to get.

Most of the Rushall lads drank in the Miners Arms and ran a minibus from there to away games, although a few got banned for a few years after a scrap at Tranmere in 1989/90. Funny how daft bits of black humour stick in your mind but one of their lot ( and I can’t remember his bleedin name for the life of me) was stood in the Street End that last year at Fellows Park when we were just losing every week so there was a bit of room and not much atmosphere, we were playing Bristol Rovers and it was 0-0 and some anorak type had his transistor radio up to his ear listening to the scores, lad shouts “turn that ■■■■■■■ radio off I can’t hear the crowd”. I used to love stuff like that pure Walsall, another one was when we were even worse a few years later in div4, York away. About 30 of us stayed in the Bootham Tavern until 5 to 3 and then robotically downed our pints and started marching towards the ground with little hope of getting in before Kick off. 30 of us crossing one road in unison with that fast walk you do between pub and ground, a posh couple were crossing in the opposite direction and mid road the posh bloke grabs this Walsall lad and asks “excuse me, is there some kind of football game on here today?” Without breaking stride the Walsall lad goes " no mate, there’s just a sale on at Woolworths".

Early in the 1921 Season probably taken before match against either Tranmere,Stalybridge Celtic, Wigan Borough or Hartlepool Utd. My grandad (Ernie Eden) is back row, extreme right.

The goalkeeper is Merrick I think and the others are probably Christie, Timmins, Jackson, Spence, Butler, Reid, Bowyer, Bowen and Groves but as to which is which I haven’t a clue.

It’s up in our hall. I am very proud of it!

Two more though obviously not Fellows Park!

One from 1906 (my grandad front row seated extreme right)

and one taken in France during the First World War (my grandad extreme right 2nd row)

Great photo , very clear for the year. Did your granddad tell you of his playing days for Walsall? Must be nice having such a close connection with the club .Do you know if that stand in the background is the same one that was at Fellows Park in the later years.

I believe the basic stand is the same one, with numerous adaptions since that time.

I would have it in my hall if it were my relative. Incidentally a good article in the programmes about you on Saturday.

He only played 9 games for the first team according to The Saddlers Book. He had some sort of knee injury which ended his short Walsall career. I was quite young (well over 50 years ago) when he used to talk about playing football and should have written things down! He played for Cradley Heath as well.
I’m afraid that I don’t know about the stand though presume it was.

Thanks.I posted something about the Sierra Leone - Walsall link on a Walsall Facebook page ( v strong links between Hull and Freetown) and was very surprised to be asked about doing the programme article. I dashed off a quick e-mail which I would have taken a lot more care with if I’d realised that a lot of it would end up verbatim in the programme!
A friend told me it was in so I bought 3 copies along with my Carlisle ticket on Monday.

Well it read ok even if it was "dashed’ off…I like the articles from ‘far away’ fans …mind you Hull is virtually’local’ compared to some!!!

I think that is Steve Whitworth in the number two shirt, but who is the Leicester player stumbling? I recognise him but can’t think of a name.

Think it may be Steve Simms?
