P-P vs WBA (H) - Tue 27th July, 7:30pm

Remember when John Aldridge ex Worcs and Tasmania, made his debut at Gorway. He paced out his run up, and ended up half way up the pavilion steps

I think he only coached Derbyshire and Somerset but maybe wrong.

The papers hardly cover B’ham league now.

Gregg Mathews was the best I have seen at Oldhill.

I remember the great Alf Valentine playing for Walsall CC in 1951. He took 8 wickets in one of the matches I saw.

This thread has become a load bails

I’ll be glad when it’s all over.

Bit of a silly point.

Just looked it up, it was Graham not Terry, his meme was Graham Yallop, he captained Australia at one time, he was also the first player to wear a helmet apparently.

Umpires call.

Bet the Villa Fan kept that (Mole)

Do you remember when Tom Graveney came to play at Gorway. I think with Dudley. It was when he was between playing for Gloucestershire and Worcestershire. As a young lad my dad took me to watch him but all I recall is the queue to get in and sitting on a rather hard wooden bench. Early to mid fifties I would think.

His first season for Worcester was 1962, and because of the rules back then he was unable to play first class cricket in 1961. I don’t know if that was when he played for Dudley.

Later than I thought then .Was it just one season he couldn’t play I wonder?

Yes, just 1961 that was a blank for him.

Thanks for that. My memory must be playing tricks with me …perhaps the queues and hard benches were when I was taken to see Alf Valentine rather than Graveney. I was 16 in 1961 and my dad was then too ill to take me anywhere and I think, on reflection ,I went with some mates.

There’s a quiz question in there Jumbo re: Graham Yallop. As you say he captained the Aussies and this was in the very early Packer years I think.

Yes, I think that he was Captain then, at a time when they struggled, although his own batting record for Australia was good iirc.
