I can’t remember that. I seem to think we felt a bit hard done to over something or other, but I don’t remember what.
Yep that happened
Ive never used so many bad words to describe someone- to my own nan
Yes i was there. It was a Gary Wales effort tgat was going in. Jorge was almost on the line and tapped it in. He was offside and we drew a game we shpuld have won.
From this pathetic anecdote I can confirm that absolute dislike of Chesterfield was definitely a thing with me at least.
When my future wife and I started courting in 1981, she used to travel down from York by train every other weekend to see me. As the journey down and back entailed a stop at Chesterfield, I implored her to give the V-sign to all and anyone on the platform.
I very much doubt that she ever did, but I like to think that she might have done.
As I had been going to away matches since the early to mid-seventies, my dislike extends for nigh on fifty years now.
I assume you never went to Saltergate . Not a criticism by the way, im just older than you mate
Never felt totally safe at Saltergate. Had a meeting this week with a chap who’s a big Spireite and said whenever we went there, a group of 30-40 of “your lot” would come up to the corner near our away terrace as the fencing would allow and give us verbals and gestures for the entire first half before scuttling off back to the “home end” for the 2nd half.
He joked “I hope I wasn’t one of them” !!
I heard someone mention 2,650 had been sold as of yesterday.
Yeah and it’s not like we ended getting relegated on goal difference is it
Yes, somewhat blotted Jorge’s copybook, and the reason he did it was for the goal bonus.
I have lived in North Staffs since 1967 and there has usually been a sense of doom and gloom among the locals when they played Walsall. This was made worse by their football reporter on the Evening Sentinel, the late Chris Harper, always using headlines like HERE COME THE BOGEYMEN.
However, I spent an afternoon with Colin Askey a few years ago, and he thought that Port Vale and Walsall were very similar clubs with the same sort of players. But he did not have the same feelings towards Mansfield, who were his next club when he left us.
Club have just said they’ve now sold 2800
Agree Steve Baines was a good ref - maybe better as a ref than as a player - wholehearted but a bit erratic at times I seem to recall. Remember a game at home to Carlisle in the early 80s when he scored an own goal them made up for it by getting the winner for us (I think - memory a bit hazy)
Erratic but very very hard even for his era.
Amazing he became a referee given his playing style, though he may have been a better referee than most for it.
No never had the pleasure of Saltergate.
First couple of years of me going to games I do remember playing them at home a lot , always a mossive henchmen type team but goalscorers like Lomor and some striker called Wilkinson.
As for the fans, well…it’s Chezzafield , it’s a ‘unique’ place.
Going back in time i always found rivalry with Chesterfield. Not like a derby rivalry more of a Christ its them again type rivalry.
Shrewsbury and Hereford were also quite boisterous whilst i just found Crewe jolly annoying, especially after the Methven play off game.
Ive always disliked the six fingered ones at the end of the A454 but the two main ones for me are Vale and Wrexham.
Wrexham of old, not the new fangled one.
Specially when Micky Thomas played for them in the 70s very spicy affairs.I have and old golfing mate Mel Sutton who played for them always used to wind me up saying “ I can’t remember ever losing to Walsall .” with a big grin on his face .
This was the last time they kind of “met”.
Stoke under 21’s away at vale in the Football League Trophy.
Full house and absolute carnage.
We don’t come close anymore.
2750 atm
They trashed Vale Park- if that’s possible
That looks like the whole of Staffordshire’s police force. And they’ve got their riot helmets on.
