Port Vale Rivalry

To prove your point I had never heard of Chesterfield being a rival of any sort!

My dad always says that Wrexham used to be a grudge match.

Chesterfield was always tasty in the 70’s. I’m embarrassed to say that I once got in there with an 18ā€ metal pipe hidden, which I threw into the area where their fans were :rage:

ā€œIs that a metal pipe you have hidden or are you just pleased to see Alan Buckley?ā€

I was at that game too. Midweek game as I remember. Waiting to get out of the car park after the game and a couple of lads fighting rolled across our bonnet. Seemed to take forever to get away from the ground that night!

I seem to remember a game against Vale, it would have been in the 80’s sometime at Vale Park, it was foggy, they were lobbing bricks over at us so I spent all game trying to watch the game and dodge the bricks at the same time

Even though we have left the EU, I believe we still have an extradition agreement with Spain.

I was thinking more along the lines of ā€˜Sexy Beast’.

Don: You ever worked in an office?
Jackie: No.
Don: Nice telephone voice. I’ve worked in an office. I was 17. Does that surprise you?
Deedee Dove: What, that you were 17?
Don: [slow malevolent head turn] You got very nice eye, Deedee. Never noticed them before. They real?

I hear there is some very nice decorative tiling at the bottom of his pool.

God yes I remember the celebration for Kenny’s ( sorry , ā€œmyā€ ) goal being off the scale . Off the knees into the top of the net at the Hilary Street in the last few mins v Chesterfield.

Not quite as big as the other gem you picked out : Childs v Shrewsbury which has to be one of the best of all time . That followed up a build up of pressure from us it all exploded when we scored , what a rasper it was too .

Amazing how we still remember stuff so vividly 40 years on !! Both cup games interestingly , early / mid 80’s … the cup really mattered then .

Villa and Wolves fans just have something about them which puts me off chatting football with them. Conversation always ends in Steve Bull or European Cup 1982. But football wise we’re streets apart.

I think our footballing rivals shifts depending on our division and what’s going on in that division or where players and managers go. I don’t think we can class anyone as our actual rivals.

We weren’t keen on Mansfield for a while, not bothered now !

That Gary Childs goas was one of the biggest surges i ever experienced in the Street End :rofl:

Amazing. We’d camped in their half for about 25 minutes and they had been holding out…and then Gary Childs hit a belter and it was unbelievable, best goal ever. I’d travelled with friends who were Salop fans, I’d like to say on the journey back I was respectful and not smug and didn’t gloat at all. Yeah, right. :joy: Credit to them for not throwing me out of the car somewhere on the A5, I would have deserved it.

This has been an interesting down memory lane thread , I find it weird how some can’t ā€œrememberā€ what for me are our true rivalries - mind you I left the UK so long ago now it was literally a different place.

But as I said
Slopies
Vale
Followed by
Chesterfield

Will always for me have special meaning

God yeah forgot about dave.

He used to run the shop opposite my parents in Leighswood Road, Aldridge in the 1970’s after he’d retired. Always seemed like a good bloke. He must be getting on a bit now as I’m 67 and he was older then me.

I think that was the game that Nick Athey scored from a corner.
