Sky Sports agrees new five-year EFL deal

I’m just going on what the Sky press release says. To show 248 live league two matches they’re going to be showing a lot more than one or two a week.

Each season, Sky Sports will broadcast a minimum of:

  • 328 Sky Bet Championship matches
  • 248 Sky Bet League One matches
  • 248 Sky Bet League Two matches
  • All 15 Play-Off matches
  • All 93 Carabao Cup matches
  • All 127 EFL Trophy matches

248÷46=5.39
So about 5 a match day/week.
So yes 5 out of 12 every weekend.
Disruption every other week on average.

Half that (that’s is League one & two), then predict how many times they are going to choose us, unless we are in with a shot of going up.

I might have been light on two or three, but it’s not going to be all that much.

As above, 248 league one matches and 248 league two matches.

You are correct! My apologies, I’d read it as league one and two. Fair play.

I still don’t have an issue to be honest, and think especially for away games it’s a good thing, but you’re right I had underestimated how many we might get.

Going by the Sky press release, if the new arrangement had been in place this season, we would have been televised at least 18 times in the league, not counting any other Saturday matches chosen to be televised.

first and last games - 2
bank holiday games - 4
international Saturdays - 2 (we were able to postpone 2 others)
midweek league games - 10

We would also have had a further 4 cup games televised.

Generally we get lower crowds for evening matches, and generally we get lower crowds for televised matches. Presumably the club have done the sums and think the extra tv money will compensate for that.

I know for a fact that some supporters will have bought a season ticket on the basis that we play Saturdays at 3pm and, for work or family reasons, playing games at other times will restrict their opportunity to use their season ticket. In turn they will be less likely to buy a season ticket in the future. Presumably the club have done the sums and think the extra tv money will compensate for that.

Moving Saturday 3pm matches to lunchtimes or evenings will surely negatively affect away fans: we could get Carlisle or Gillingham away on Friday night, Saturday lunchtime, Saturday evening, Sunday lunchtime, Sunday evening, for example. Similarly they could have to travel to us at those times. None of those would be an improvement on Saturday afternoons and can only reduce away followings.

Although we are fortunate that we are centrally located, for fans of those clubs out on a limb geographically there will be a major impact. Presumably the club have done the sums and think the extra tv money will compensate for that.

I think supporters will realise how big a change this is when the fixture list appears in June. I can see what’s in it for people who live further away, however I don’t see anything in this that is an improvement for the fans who actually go to games.

Still going to be extra disruption of having games moved from the Saturday 3pm kick off time which although that’s accepted in the Premiership I don’t want it at league 1 and 2 level

If they’re changed to 12:30, 5:30, 7:30 on a Saturday or the same on a Sunday, i don’t mind. I’ll still be there :grinning:

Very much doubt that as those are the main premiership kick off times. It will all be mid week

Says in the Sky article ‘each weekend’

Like El Nombre says anyway, we probably won’t be selected that many times, so nothing really to worry about.

And if it does, people will just plan around it well beforehand, as the fixtures are announced months before it’s actually played.

It’s great that League 1 and 2 are finally getting coverage.

You are entitled to your opinion but I don’t agree.

It will be a lot more than a few times a season based on 240 odd games from League 2.

I can cope with the kick off times even if I don’t like it, but this is only the beginning. There are enough half empty stadiums, this overtime is going to have an effect I am sure. Not good news but kind of inevitable unfortunately. Fans don’t matter.

I don’t agree either. It will be significantly more than 3 times a season . I understand why Bags 10 is trying to justify that impact is minimal because he wants to attend all the games. Reality is though he’s going to be more inconvenienced than ever before. Particulary with midweek away games with weird kick off times

If spread evenly its 10 home games per team (plus 8 spare).
So that’s nearly every other home game plus potentially 12 of our aways disrupted.
I think you’re right it’ll have a huge effect on crowd size, especially the away following.
Shite for atmosphere, except really big games where people will want to have been there on the day.

Agreed. Just wishful thinking those who say it will only impact a couple of games

Yes they’ve said that they’ll announce up to the FA Cup 3rd round date in early January, before the season starts, and that’s good. No chance they’ll do the same for the rest of the season.

I get that other people will see it differently, and in the end the clubs are all about the money. I have realised this kind of thing has been coming for some time now.

I spent a lot of time teaching the kids that Football isn’t a TV programme, but it pretty much is nowadays.

Apparently, this information has been out there for some time but I didn’t know about it, not to this extent.

Things move on and you have to adapt I guess, but I find it kind of sad.

Every single Tuesday night game will be live. That
will account for a lot of the total.

Then it says five games from Lgs 1 and 2 combined will be live each weekend.

So, most likely, 2 League Two games each weekend won’t be at 3pm.

How often we’ll get picked is anyones guess.

How many you thinking it will impact then?

Luckily I won’t have Sky as a matter of principle, precisely because of what pay tv has done to sport. So actually I shouldn’t be whinging, as it won’t affect me. :upside_down_face:

It probably will harm attendances. Bigger clubs have enough die hards to travel to all the silly kick off times. Won’t happen so much at our level I expect.
