The Official Summer No Transfer Rumours Thread 2024/25

That does have an impact on stats.

Lets not go for someone from the higher leagues, looking for his last pay check before retirement. I like the way the squad is forming up - lots of youth with some old experienced heads. We’ve got a couple of experienced forwards (though I still think DJ more likely to leave than not) - lets get a couple of young guns in now. Faal would be perfect but I’m not going to hold my breath on that one.

Forest Green. Signed for them in January and played against us

He’s made out of glass.

I mentioned him earlier on this thread but if we’re playing money ball seriously we should look at Ollie Pearce 99 games for Worthing , 70 goals . Yes he’s 28 , yes it’s in the national league south but that’s the type of stat that should get data analysis deep diving

I’m not adverse to us signing non league players but we’d need to get the balance right in the squad.Sign too many and there’s a chance you’ll end up there yourself but if we strike a good balance and drop on a couple of gems it could prove fruitful.

Signed for York

But the fact he’s 28 goes against the moneyball theory anyway!

Add that to the fact he’s never played higher and last season was an exceptional one.

Moneyball works of spotting players who are underperforming their potential not exceeding it for one off seasons.

The best example of moneyball right now at this level is Danilo Orsi who someone identified as a player underperforming in terms of output but showing signs of potential with his XG.

Anyway, Ollie Pearce has signed for York City in National League with his ex Worthing manager!!

Hopefully, York might sell Akinyemi. 27 now but always gets 15 to 20 goals a season. Would be a cracking permanent signing.

I completely disagree on your fundamental view of Money Ball.
Money Ball works on the principal of acquiring players to do specific tasks within a budget. In baseball it’s fundamentals like get on base , move runners across , bat runners in and how much you pay for each of those stats to build your team . In soccer that translates to goals , assists, passes completed , interceptions etc . It’s not about age or lack of experience, it’s almost the opposite, money dictates you ignore factors outside the stat your looking at, that’s how money Ball works , your not looking for the complete player , your looking at the one or two pieces of data you need in you line up.

If your in the Trivela world however your also looking at investment in assets with players being those assets so that is where age comes , experience etc come into play. So we need a mix.

In the pure money ball world we need to aquire stats that will deliver us 90 goals + , and concede only 50 or less to get 80 points + . In the player investment world you need players like Williams, Ram , Barrett, Smith , Jellis who can potentially become gems . There two different games were trying to mould as one.

Anyone can pick out the player that does all those things well.

Moneyball relates to spotting the underlying data that doesn’t necessarily translate or is evident to the current or obvious end result.

The idea is you spot something that others have missed due to it being underlying and it represents its value for money!!

Yes I agree, so moneyball doesn’t represent someone who will have no re-sell or asset value.

Ok so let’s just wave a cheque book around and sign the best players money can buy. They guarantee those things.

Can’t see Walsall being into Money Ball anyway. They don’t like spending money much and aren’t keen on having the ball for too long.

Maybe Dickie ‘no dosh’ Dash is more apt…

Or scratchings ball.

Theres a lad at Gateshead who did well last season and seems highly rated I’ve forgotten his name @geordiesaddler may know him

It’s a bit of a killer that he’s gone to Burton.

I’m sure I saw a sign up on one of the advertising hoardings at the Bescot that says No Ball Games. It all makes sense now.

Marcus (Don’t look back) Dinanga? If it’s him you mean then yes, he did do well. He’s a Birmingham lad too. I used to teach him

Could be mate got 19 last season

Don’t argue with a baseball guy on money ball . It’s not about resale value or trade on value . It’s about improving out comes with a limited budget - even google agrees with me .

Moneyball (uncountable) (baseball) Baseball management relying on sabermetrics . (by extension) The application of advanced analytics to any domain in order to improve outcomes.

Money Ball enabled and still does enable small market teams to compete with giants of baseball , when done right it’s pure genius. A baseball GM doesn’t care about transfer value , he is building a team through the farm system and free agency for the single purpose of gaining 90 plus wins to get to the play offs , trade value rarely comes into it if at all as he likely will be on the wrong end of any trade and he knows that. He knows each team he builds if successful has two / three years max before he can’t afford to keep the team together and he has to do it all over again.

As I stated Trivela are carrying out TWO strategies and moulding then into One , yes TWO. The second being an investment strategy in players to make a return which compliments a Money Ball strategy of acquiring players for a very specific purpose or stat within a budget.

The film, while it shows Billy Beane as a likeable guy which as a non As fan he isn’t, actually explains Money ball very well.

Let’s leave it there. Unless you really want a baseball discussion in which case DM me. Let’s not clog the thread up with irrelevant chatter
