You know who you’re arguing with, right?!
I was about to say, I’m sure in the Moneyball film the main guy who they signed was perceived as being a washed up ex-pro past his best. It was all about whether he could get ‘on base’ and the sell on value didn’t come into it.
More like balls scratching!
So as I see it, this is where we are right now, there is the basis of a solid if not spectacular side there. Obviously Smith & Foulkes are still unknown so that could change the picture somewhat but whilst I am certainly not all doom and gloom there are some concerns:
- We are desperately light up top. Neither of those players is capable of playing 46 matches and there is a good chance one of them isn’t even wanted by the manager. At least 2 more attacking players are needed.
- We are hoping that the majority of the untested non league signings are up to the job, if not we will be in trouble if injuries hit hard.
- I do not know anything about the young keeper but if Jacko leaves we could do with at least 1 experienced hand.
- Potential loss of Hutch could be a big hole to fill unless Maher develops as we all hope he can.
Overall though at least we have enough names to put on a team sheet with 2 starters for almost every position. There have been many years when we were looking at wholesale changes across all positions and I do agree that currently we are looking at evolution not revolution.
Don’t forget the bench. Minimum 8 still needed.
Pierrot is sub again for Drogheda (tonight). Not sure he will be the next fan favourite
I’ve got it on see how they do tonight.
Why would I want a conversation about baseball? What a weird thing to say.
I understand and agree with your explaination…as boring as it was….
My point is money ball is not about picking the obvious most productive and clearly achieving player on the market, it’s about identifying players that can achieve more than what is clearly identifiable to the mainstream.
Money ball is seeing value and attributes in the underlying data that are not obvious to everyone that gives you a value added outcome.
Looking at the top scorer in the league two levels below and simply saying he’ll help us get our 90 goals cos he scored 46 last season is nonsense and laughable.
As I said an example of money ball in football is identifying that Orsi was capable of scoring those goals due to the underlying data showing that he possessed a talent that if refined and fitted into the right system would outperform his actual return.
Back at F Green
Abysmal game so far they are 1-0 down at half time
Walsall fan TV are reporting a rumor Trivela have cut the budget by 15 percent. Going to be almost impossible to compete if this is correct
Please don’t shoot the messenger . That’s what was said!
Yep, literally f*** all to do with sell on value
He said before writing an (incorrect) essay on moneyball
You’re right, its difficult to assess induvidual players in this set up. I have no idea, after watching a couple of Drogs games whether Weir or Peirrot are any good. Peirrot, certainly has the physical attributes, but could only be assessed in trial games, in a reasonable team, against reasonable opposition.
Yep well that makes sense because we’re talking about the concept of a moneyball approach within football, which is clearly not going to follow the exact blueprint that it follows in a completely different sport.
Resale may not particularly apply, most certainly not in the film or in baseball but in football it would be a consideration. That was all I meant by that.
My point remains that the idea is to identify players and their particular attributes who can add value to your team from underlying data as opposed to clear and obvious “he’s the best goalscorer let’s sign him mentality”.
… the concept is literally directly taken from Baseball! what the f***
Yes the concept is and no one has denied that ya buffoon.
The concept is and has now been applied to football which will then offer nuances because the two sports are very different.
I didn’t want a conversation about baseball (which was what was offered) and I said I agreed with much if not all of his post on how it works in baseball.
Can you read ok?
Perfectly. I particularly enjoyed the bit where you whinged about talking about baseball then tried to give everyone an in depth lesson about a concept directly taken from baseball and got it completely wrong “ya bafoon”
Can I interject.
I just want a football team that isn’t crap please
I didn’t attempt to give anyone an in depth lesson in anything and didn’t “whinge” about talking about baseball. I was asked if I wanted a discussion about baseball and declined.
What I actually said in respect of moneyball and Ollie Pearce, is that the concept is based on finding hidden gems using underlying data not traditionally used scouting methods.
It’s literally the definition of what moneyball is.
Btw it’s Buffoon. A ridiculous but amusing person.
