The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread 2024 II

Football crowds are much increased in general since that time. We are at over 5k now, so with a little success, it could be possible to fill 80% of the ground regularly .

I’m a lifelong fan as I would guess you are. I might have a moan but I will turn up regardless. If I was one of those fans who could take it or leave it, what is there to entice me to go and watch Walsall now? The football is awful, and we don’t really have any players that get you off your seat. I understand it is 4th division football but we do a great job of making it as boring as possible.

Yea, since I was about 7 or 8. But that’s always been our trouble glory hunters following Wolves, Villa or Albion, then Man U Leeds and Chelsea, now Man City, Barca and Madrid.
As I said \I think success is the only way to keep people coming back for us. Then after a generation or two there might be a larger “hereditary” fanbase. Ah well, we live in hope.

We need a bit of success to keep us going. One good thing about the current squad is that they do seem to have a good attitude and spirit. That is not enough in itself but, over recent years, it has not always been the case.

Whatever else, I would hate to go back to the days of one grizzled, experienced manager after another, each bringing in his mates as assistant and so on. Sadler may well fail but I would always take someone like him - in the sense of being ambitious and fresh - than another Flynn.

Mark my words.

There will being excess of 5,000 in the audience on Saturday and Morecambe won’t bring a particularly impressive gate with them.

How much is a match day ticket now £20, reduce it to say £14 and you might get more in.

Agree with that. I think Clarke wasted money on bringing in players from Bristol Rovers such as Clarke and Sinclair. There were others as well who I can’t recall off the top of my head, was one Lavery?. Not good enough for a promotion push and that year was probably our best opportunity to bounce straight back. Miles off it now but at least we have a mostly young squad with the hope that they can improve.

I think it may be £22 in the lower now. It’s not cheap at all now.

Wins, attractive football and goals brings in fans but also think £20 a match would increase fanbase

How many walk ups are gonna pay £22 to watch us have 35% possession and a few shots on target at home. Needs to be value for money else fans will drift away from the club. I’ll be amazed if we get over 5k at home on Saturday with morecambe bringing 100 unless we do some decent transfer business by then. Funny how the club was quick to shout out when we get over 3k season ticket sales. Wonder why they haven’t said the figure this pre season

The one thing the 5000 won’t have this season is patience…that ship has sailed.

When did this happen? Between Clarke and Flynn, who I suppose you were referring too, was the completely raw Matt Taylor and half a season under Dutton, both considerably worse than the other two?

The Flynn hate is bizarre, but writing off experienced managers all together is just complete nonsense.

There is no Flynn hate from me. I am merely saying that I prefer someone without baggage. As has been said before, many of our successful teams have had rookie managers. Chris Nichol was the exception and, in any case, he was a top coach, not someone who has moved from team to team in the lower divisions. People often talk about “knowing the division” but all that means is that they have not been able to get out of it.

You still bring him up regularly a year and a half after he was given his marching orders.

But it doesn’t answer my question, when did we have “one grizzled manager after another”?

I can go back further: Keates first job in league management, relegated. Whitney year on year of degradation both virtual rookies. Dean Smith was a rookie and to be fair produced our best spell of the last 24 years. Chris Hutchings granted was a veteran but he’s probably the last manger before Clarke you could fairly give that title too. I’m just asking exactly when this long spell of experienced manager after experienced manager was?

I agree
Pretty sure we’re famous for not going for well known managers
Going For Clarke seems pretty crazy and a coup at the time

I got my ticket for Morecambe last week. Not bothered with a season ticket as I am eyeing up a ruck of away games. Upper tier - £26 with a 2 quid reduction with buying in advance!!

And there’s examples of relative success and disaster in both. At the end of the day the best man for the job is the best man for the job regardless of experience or anything else. Just nonsense to write one or the other off.

Very very expensive to watch football at this level. Football needs to be much better to attract walk ups imo

Totally agree
An experienced jamille Matt is not better than a 16 year old Michael Owen
Just got to find the talent in the crowd

I was going back rather further.

Ok, well I too hope we don’t go for a grizzled set from the 80/90s who by now would be a hundred :+1:t3:
