It’s weird really how your perspectives change with age, when i was a teenager the results would probably account for about 30% of a matchday experience.
Now i would say it was probably 80%, that is why there seems to be more people on here bemoaning results rather than enthusing about the experience
First time I’ve seen them this season and I agree entirely that they just don’t seem fit enough for this league. It was noticeable how leggy they all were from about an hour onwards.
Positive for me -
Goalie is obvious quality
Mayonnaise surprised me, has to be him and one other
There’s a player in Earing albeit he’s obviously learning
Wilkinson is class. Good players around him and he storms this league.
The new bar is decent albeit the tellys were a bit fuzzy
They looked exactly what they are. A team that is trying but short of confidence, experience of playing together and fitness. Hopefully a win gets em going.
Three points and Sweet Caroline, but no Starship ?
I thought the same as most others, kinsella and laberdi are to far back all of the time invite pressure. Meed sorting
I don’t really care how we got the win, we bloody needed it. To be fair even though we may have played a bit better against Scunthorpe I thought Scunthorpe looked a better side than Stevenage. I guess it’s only one game v each to go off.
What was strikingly obvious yesterday, the standard of football is really really awful. Few bits of quality from Wilkinson but other than that mainly rough and tumble which I guess you would expect at this level. Which is why it is a concern that we look shot after an hour every game. It is bound to cost us a lot of points if we don’t get it sorted.
The last time I saw us win a game in the flesh was Forest Green away (I missed a few games after that with illness) feels like a lifetime ago now. So even though it wasn’t pretty, I came out the ground feeling really good and Sunday morning felt a whole lot better too.
Good win for Port Vale , dam and blast them.
Not sure I go along with this narrative that all the players are unfit. Some of it is down to the problem of the team structure and the gaps which exist between the front men and the rest. Phillips ,Wilkinson and Earing were struggling in the latter stages but they spent a great deal of energy trying to press and chasing hopeless balls. They all needed replacing but ,of course, other than Osedebe we had no like for like replacements. Labadie also is clearly not fully fit yet but we know there was some COVID in the camp pre season and yesterday was his first 90 minutes. He will be better for it. The others all looked fit to me and the fact we held out comfortably is testament to that .
I should have had a double on Wilkinson to score with his left foot and Labadie to be Yellow carded always happens when I don’t back my predictions.
As well as the obvious bo11*cks from people like me, there seems to be some quite good analysis and strategy from some on here who actually seem to know what they are talking about. How many of you send your “advice/suggestions” to the club?
Just curious.
There’s a really nice twitter exchange between Mickey Beardmore and a few fans that’s really into the analyses and strategy.
Shame I dow do Twitter.
To be fair to MT with Holden and Shade injured he had few attacking options available. Hence everyone on here saying we need 2 more forwards. We disagree on a lot but I think on this we are all agreed.
I did.
The “passing” identity was well and truly ditched to be replaced with too many long hopeful balls. I think it is evident we are missing a Holden type player who can link defence to attack.
The long balls showed that neither Phillips nor Wilkinson are target men and so the ball kept coming back.
Yesterday, there were only a couple of occasions we played it left to right and back again, and we certainly didn’t pass through Kinsella or Labadie. The previous week Taylor said that we had to earn the right to play, and yesterday we tried to earn the right and then impose our style, but it didn’t happen.
If we get a Holden type player, then we will be able to transition from defence to attack. I didn’t see the Doncaster game, but we did OK at this against Tranmere, but largely because Shade and Kiernan offered us width and they provided the link.
Oh ok mate I was just wondering because I seen passing across the back myself but with more long balls and balls down the line which might not always bring you joy but certainly puts the opposition on the back foot if only for a few minutes. We have to mix it up in my opinion as teams know already we like to play out from the back they ain’t daft so I have nothing against longer balls which with a decent strong hold up type player will suit and bring others into play I feel we will see Wilkinson in an even better light when this happens because he’s a cut above this lot I saw him in the warm up and it’s plain to see.
Interesting. Ta!
Jobi Mcanuf , on Quest EFL last night said Wilkinson with his ability he should be 15/20 goals a season
Anyone got a link to the highlight (sic)**?
Not in this current squad he won’t,I thought the keeper could have done better to save his shot for the goal yesterday but I think I did Wilkinson a disservice to be honest I think he’s given the keeper to eyes looking to bend it to the keepers right but pulled it left in the bottom corner he did exactly the same in the warm up beforehand looks a good signing but he ain’t getting 15 in this squad with a fully fit Holden and a striker that can bring him into play yes without those two pieces of the jigsaw no.
