Below some hints and tips for those amongst the travelling gate on Sunday to get the most out of your day…

The arena

Away fans are located in the huge East Stand on one side of the stadium. While this stand has a capacity of 4,000, it is extremely rare for any National League team to take that many tickets so the stand is often used by home supporters, too with strict segregation to ensure no fans of opposing teams come into contact with one another.

The stand is covered, free of supporting pillars and so fans have a quite superb unobstructed view of the playing action. The facilities inside the stand are good, as well as the catering, which offers a selection of pies (beef, vegetable and pork) hot dogs and burgers (beef and vegetable).

In terms of the negatives, well, it’s fairly obvious. The running track makes you feel extremely far away from the pitch, which can make following the match quite difficult. However, the biggest effect the running track has is on the atmosphere. All noise seems to just fade away, and the fact that most home fans are located opposite in the Main Stand doesn’t help.

Pubs for away spectators

There is a bar located inside the Main Stand, called the ‘Stadium Bar’, but unfortunately, this is for home fans only.

Fortunately, none of the pubs around the stadium enforce strict fan segregation, meaning away fans are free to enter any establishment they wish including poorly behaved ones on occasion. Some of the pubs near the Gateshead International Stadium include:

  • The Tilley Stone – Unit 9, 10 Jackson St, Gateshead NE8 1EE. A hugely popular JD Wetherspoons outlet much loved by residents of Gateshead and visitors alike.

  • The Travellers Rest – 1-2 Southend Rd, Gateshead NE9 6QL. A public house offering a wide selection of drinks including beer, wine and cider. Often favoured by travellers looking to rest after travelling.

The Portland Arms – 5-7 Split Crow Rd, Felling, Gateshead NE10 9HL. Great atmosphere. Friendly Bar Staff and good new karaoke set up.

Gateshead FC chants

The following are some popular Gateshead F.C chants:

  • We Are Gateshead

  • Blyth is a f***g abomination

  • Super Carter Milmore

  • Classic Gateshead Clap

  • Hi Di Ho

Good to know

The stadium has its own Metro stop called Gateshead Stadium, which is a five-minute walk away. This stop is around a ten minute journey away from Newcastle Central railway station, which is also the nearest mainline station.

The official matchday magazine is available for all league and cup games for a cost of £3.

It’s hard to say until you know what the five letter word beginning with f and ending in g, is.

Asterix use is galling.

I’d rather we get a decent draw for once and a big team like Liverpool, Manure, Man City, Arsenal or Chelsea at home. Much better than those tatters in orange shirts.

It would have to be Man Utd away if we want to make some money out of it.

Everton, Newcastle, Villa, Spurs and Arsenal would also guarantee 40 to 50k crowds and very decent money

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

T’bloody match is only on TNT and Discovery+ :slightly_frowning_face:. We’ve got Virgin Media, Amazon Prime and Netflix but not TNT. Does anyone amongst you experts know a way we can see the game down here in Swansea?
(BTW, it’s more than my life’s worth to suggest getting yet another subscription for, ahem, one game)

It ‘s real bone of contention. The FA, the BBC and TNT, in line with the post-truth world we now live in, have been trumpeting the new deal as a wonderful extension of access to the FA Cup that all fans will have. The truth is that with ITV ‘free-to-air’ removed from the equation and BBC cut back to a couple of games per round, fans won’t have access unless they are prepared to pay through the nose for it - TNT / Discovery do not have a day pass, unlike the one Sky / Now TV offer, so if you don’t have TNT, you’ll have to cough up £30.99 to see the game.

Dodgy fire Stick?

Not sure on Flint. Don’t think the broken nose will trouble him but he sat on the pitch immediately at the final whistle last week and had to be pulled up.I watch him walk off after applauding the fans and he was definitely very wobbly on his legs. Hopefully the blow to the nose just knocked him a bit sick and didn’t give him a concussion. That would probably rule him out of all 3 games this week.
