W 2-0 vs Gateshead (A) – Sun 7th Dec, 3.30pm (FA Cup R2)

The Saddlers make the 4 hour trip up the M1/A1 to the Gateshead International Stadium to face Gateshead in the 2nd round of the FA Cup.

Due to being chosen for TV coverage this game is on a Sunday and kicks off at 3:30pm

The Opposition

The Tynesiders just missed out on a play off spot in the National League by a single point last season, finishing 8th.

This season they currently sit in the relegation positions in 21st place.

The Proposition

An odd Sunday 3:30pm kick off due to the match being selected by TNT Sports for its FA Cup coverage.

Since their win against Eastleigh in the FA Cup 1st Round, the Saddlers have won 4 of the last 5 with only a home loss to Colchester. Despite continuing to start slow in the first halves of the last few games they have gone on to win with the latest being a 2-1 reverse of Stevenage to progress to the last 16 of the EFL Trophy. Ricoh Richards bagging both goals after some indifferent performances and Jake Holman providing an assist after spending much of the season out of the squad.

Since shocking AFC Wimbledon and knocking them out of the FA Cup, Gateshead have played 6 times (5 in the league and 1 in the National League Cup. All 6 have been losses, scoring only 3 but conceding 19. Their last game was a 4-2 away loss to Sutton United.

The First, Worst and Last Time

It doesn’t appear that we have ever played the current incarnation of Gateshead, but we did play the previous Gateshead United on 14 occasions in the league (Division Three North and Division Four) between 1931 and 1960 when they folded. The first being a 2-1 loss at home on 31st August 1931 and the last being a 3-0 away loss on 25th April 1960. That was also the worst result for us.

On a more positive note, and relevant to the FA Cup, we played the separate AFC Gateshead on 27th November 1937 beating them 4-0 in at home.

Played for both

Danny Johnson currently plays as a striker for National League club Hartlepool United.

Johnson began his career as a youngster with Middlesbrough and later moved into the youth system at Hartlepool United, scoring 21 goals for the club’s youth team during the 2010–11 season, but was released in May 2011 without making a first-team appearance. He moved to Spain with Real Murcia before returning to England, spending time on trial with Rochdale before having a brief spell with Harrogate Town, making his debut against Histon, before being released. He later joined Billingham Synthonia. Moving to Guisborough Town he scored 51 goals in 48 appearances which earned him a signing to Cardiff City who loaned him out to Tranmer Rovers and Stevenage. This led to only 4 appearances for each team with no goals before he was released. A 3 year spell with Gateshead followed before he went on to play for Motherwell, Dundee, Leyon Orient, Mansfield Town, Walsall and finally back to Hartlepool.

International career

In September 2015, Johnson was called up to an England C training camp being held at Warwick University but was forced to withdraw due to injury. In March 2016, Johnson was placed on the standby list for England C’s International Challenge Trophy match against Ukraine.

Gateshead

He scored his first goals for the club soon after with a brace against Guiseley during a 2–0 win in August 2015. His next goal for the club came three matches later during a 2–1 victory over Eastleigh during which Johnson suffered an injury after a heavy collision with Eastleigh goalkeeper Michael Poke. After a weak header back to Poke by defender Jamie Turley, Johnson beat the Eastleigh goalkeeper to the ball to score but was caught by a strong follow through by Poke. Johnson suffered a bruised lung as well as muscle damage in his ribs and hips and was stretchered off, later claiming that he believed that he was going to suffer a seizure due to the severity of the collision, which kept him out for a month.

In a 3 year spell with Gateshead from 2015-2018 he scored 44 goals in 110 appearances. He would go on to sign for Motherwell.

Walsall

On 23 July 2022, Johnson signed for fellow League Two club Walsall on a six-month loan deal. He scored a hat trick on his competitive debut when Walsall beat Hartlepool on the first day of the season on July 30. Johnson would have a very successful short loan spell with Walsall, scoring 15 goals in 30 games. Amid discussion of returning to the Saddlers, Johnson returned to his parent club following the expiry of his loan on 16 January 2023. He was released by Mansfield at the end of the 2022–23 season.

On 28 June 2023, Walsall announced that Danny had signed permanently for Walsall on a two-year deal upon the expiry of his contract on 1 July 2023. He scored on his second debut in 2-1 loss to Morecambe F.C. He also scored in Walsall’s first win in the season over Stockport County.

After struggling with injuries early in the 2024–25 season, Johnson made his mark on the campaign with a late league winner against Bradford City on 14 September. At the end of the season, Walsall confirmed that Johnson would leave the club.

Also:

Manny Smith, Martin Brittain…. Theo Vassell signed for us but didn’t play game.

Comment if you know any more!!!

Looking forward to this, staying the night on Saturday in Newcastle as it seemed abit easier than rushing on the Sunday.

Similar scoreline than the Eastleigh game with a convincing win and in the next round to face a Premier League side :handshake:t2:

Another bostin preview SS.

I would hope that we have enough to win this one comfortably and get ourselves in the hat for the third round. Trouble is, winning ‘comfortably’ or emphatically or routinely, are words we don’t use at the Bescot nowadays. That and not forgetting that as well as winning we are equally well crafted in performing abysmally, as our first half showings at Eastleigh and against Bromley proved.

Fans of a banana skin will have seen Gateshead stuff Wimbledon (a) in the last round. It’s the FA Cup after all and that’s why the Tele people are watching. We have it in us to win, it might, though, be by the odd goal and possibly only after ET (not pelanties, please not pelanties).

After beating Stevenage with virtually a reserve team,I am confident that no matter what team we put out we should still win. Maybe we should just replace Albert ( he was absolutely knackered after 75 minutes)with Kanu and play the same team with Holman starting.

I reckon that’s a fair shout there mate…

Kanu and our new found striking machine Richards should cause them enough problems

Great preview again Steve - ta very much

Fantastic preview Steve as ever.

After our recent performances I don’t think I’ve ever been more confident of a Walsall win - particularly as our opponents have lost their last 6. But as Steve says in his preview - this is Walsall and we all know what we are capable of (both the bad and the good). We hammered Barrow and still managed to lose the game as a good example.

But it’s hard to be anything less than positive about this game. After his performance against Stevenage I’d love to see a bit more of Jake Hollman. Jamie Jellis looks to be coming back too - so some tough decisions for Sadler to make in midfield.

Good luck to the travelling fans - I’m just about to sort my TNT sports subscription out for December. I’ll also be watching the Ashes, so hopefully the Saddlers can bring me at least one win before I cancel the sub. COYS!!

Top preview Steve.
The referee for this one is James Oldham from Derbyshire. He has officiated several Walsall games being an EFL official since before 2022. The most recent at the beginning of this current season, a 1-0 home win against Salford on 23 August. I must admit I have not been overly impressed by his performances, seems to inconsistent.
He has also officiated several Gateshead fixtures mainly due to having an extended spell at their level between December 2023 and November 2024, not sure if this was because of an assessor poor performance decsision to demote him to National League level for a while or injury recovery but then after getting back to a run of EFL fixtures he ended up back there at the start of this season for a few games. Seems a little strange for a referee of his seniority. I am a little surprised he has been given this game due to it being televised.
Anyhow, lets see how this one goes.

I have gone for a win but without a lot of confidence. It is a one off game and cup ties can sometimes throw up strange results.

I cannot understand those people expecting an easy win. This is a cup-tie, they are at home and they will be dreaming of a 3rd round tie with Newcastle. It’s gonna be tough. The good thing is that we are unlikely to be physically intimidated, assuming we play the first XI.

Surprisingly only 7 Saturday 3pm home games left despite 2/3 of the season still to go.
I expect some of those will change towards the end of the season too, so could be less, especially if we’re still up there.

I believe the Gateshead manager also managed Darlington who we played 5/6 seasons ago , he looked the archetypical “hard man” and his team were certainly hard to beat, I’m expecting nothing different this time.

We continue to make a few bob from this cup run, even though it’s only two games long.

Putting aside the gate money for both games, which is negligible, from the Eastleigh game we earned a £50,000 TV fee plus £47,750 for winning the game = £97,750.

For the game against Gateshead, it is a £60,000 TV fee and even if we lose, a further £21,200 from the FA = £81,200. A win would bring us £79,500 prize money and a total of £139,500. That’s getting on for £1/4 million for the two games.

Keep it coming, I say.

Plus the chance of a plum tie in the 3rd round ! If you add it to the Vertu trophy money we should be pushing the club back into the black after lasts seasons big losses ……… or we could spend it all on Kanuuuuuuu

Got to beat Gateshead first and that’s not a given, knowing us!

If we do, it’s a 1 in 5 chance of being drawn against one of the greedy leaguers.
