Still not lumping on after last seasons second half debacle & Swindon were poor yesterday.
However, a winner in injury time, having played for >70mins with ten men, is a hell of a result & more importantly a performance. Which I’m continuing to savour today.
I sat there after the sending off, thinking this might be a case for a sin bin type punishment. The challenge was non violent or dangerous. As much as i admired our resilience for the remainder of the game the sending off spoilt the game somewhat as a spectacle. I though Stuttle and Pressley looked promising in the early stages and was looking forward to watching it develop
Not the most important decision of the day, but the one that got me was the free kick the ref gave against Jellis in the first half down in our right hand corner. Their player went down but I swear there wasn’t even any contact between them.
And it’s been everywhere in-between over the years - is it progression?
I’d rather have it as it is now myself but only if it’s clearer and fairer in respect of the decision making (this is where the problem lies - I guess it’s the human factor and making mistakes!)
Part of being a football manager, at least a successful one, is making decisions that turn an opportunity into an outcome that is streets ahead of what “the average” may have been without that intervention. You can quote as many percentages and stats as you like but if they don’t result in things like promotions or trophies, and qualifications they don’t mean a thing. I really hope Sadler proves to be a successful manager, but his as yet uncrossed rubicon is turning opportunities into successful outcomes. Surely everyone hopes there will be another one in the offing this season, but if it does it has to be taken, and that will define Sadler as a manager.
Mounting a serious challenge for the autos 'til the last day and then only losing in the play off final might be considered as that. It’s all about opinions and how you take life.
Yes I get that there’s a lot of bitterness about the wheels coming of last time but some of the reaction on here is pure childishness. Bitching like babbies after a great result on the first day of the season is very, very sad.
I sort of get that, from a fans point of view, however, from an employers’ point of view it is only part of the picture.
Trivela employ Mat as the head coach, not the manager, as in the Holloway model. He is part of a management team
Trivela will value his ability to identify and develop talent and then enable that talent to be sold on for a profit, in order to reinvest in the team, as well as his ability to win promotions / trophies.
That may not be palatable to some fans, but it seems to me to be how it is. Otherwise he would have been punted at the end of last season.
Which seems to be working as the team seems better/stronger/more rounded than last seasons squad. Basically looks like the money’s been spent on upgrades all over the pitch.
Early days of course, but I think that we have a much stronger squad than at the start of last season, given that we didn’t know what Lowe would prove to be.
Still a couple to come in I hope.
