W 3-1 vs Bromley (H) – Sat 29th Nov, 3pm (League Two)

The biggest worry for me about Kanu going back is if there is a change of manager at Charlton. Same as last season with Lowe then, wanting to take a look at all the options.

It’s happened to us too many times and destroyed seasons for us, dating back to Gary O’Neil, Including George Evans and then more recently a string of our top scorers. It will be a concern until the January window closes.

That back post header to set up Finnegan was fantastic.

Have to keep Farq fit just for that extra experience alongside Flint to settle down the backline.

Fair point. Nathan Jones and Charlton were doing great till about 2 months back, it’s been very bleak the last few weeks for them. Hopefully they can turn it round.

The midfield is shite mate you won’t change my mind on that one been saying it on here for weeks.

Apart from Kanu yes the forward line also leaves a lot to be desired at times wheres Levi? I rest my case and we were top last season with a better squad than this and look what happened.

Once Lowe left I think we had a worse squad last season. There’s only Stirk I’d take back as a player. Sadler also massively overplayed the squad last season. Players like Barratt were playing pretty much every game and he was clearly shattered come new year and wasn’t rested. Sadler has already rested him this year and not played him in the cups, I feel Sadler has learnt a lot from last season. Saying that if kanu gets recalled we are in a world of trouble.

And achieved with a shit manager, according to some

Sadler only had some success because of Nathan Lowe, how many times did we hear that last season? Hasn’t aged well so far this season.

Well we didn’t have a midfield at all in the first half - bereft of anything creative and hoofball (when we tried it) got nullified by their big No5

Time will tell if we can hold things together but I do like Kanu and his scoring rate is looking very good..

One other wee bonus yesterday was keeping Cheek off the scoresheet - you can see why he converts so regularly and thankfully Robert’s good save from his best effort kept him out..

Yeah - only one of the top 7 teams dropped points yesterday and that was Bromley!

Tough at the top…

I’m not trying to change your mind, I would agree it does look limited sometimes, and some opposition teams do well against us, however it’s not a exact science the league table tells us that so far,:crossed_fingers:it’s fit purpose, yesterday was a prime example personally I don’t think anyone even Sadler really knows what his best midfield is it often seems that whatever midfield starts is improved when it’s changed whichever way round they are selected.

This is on reflection is a good thing if you can improve the team by bringing subs on its is a good indicator of a good squad.

We are where we are personally can’t see the point of people constantly trying to pick holes in it.

If Jellis can come in and show some form then the midfield could be decent, Clarke is so so good and will be a real force next season.

The Warrington, Finnigan , Lakin combination doesn’t work but he seems to favour that, we become a better team when he makes the changes.

I think if we can add one decent midfielder in January, we will certainly be stronger than last season.

It’s easy to see why teams can pick us apart though when we appear to forget (or look unable) to play the ball on the deck in the first half at home - exactly what is happening in these periods?

Are the players just going rogue?

Is the plan all about simply absorbing pressure and opposition possession for 45mins rather than competing?

We’ve seen too many teams rip us one in the first 45 mins of home games and its been quite noticeable that we’ve been relatively fortunate to keep the damage down to a single goal - Bristol Rovers, Barrow and yesterday, we could have easily gone in 0-2 down as we did vs Colchester….

I appreciate we seem to have the ability and fitness to fight back which is great (and making for exciting second halves of home games) but as a coach, surely MS feels like we do that have to stop this frustrating trend?

Clarke looks so much better coming on as a sub when the chips are down with him being given permission to maraud.

I can’t see Kanu being recalled. He’s not near championship level. Nowhere near where Lowe was this time last year.

But that doesn’t denude the importance of January. We’re short in quite a few areas.

I agree, as I said some teams have picked us apart, but it’s football that’s the opposition’s job, I don’t think our players are purposely not competing or trying it’s just that sometimes you need to give the opposition credit thankfully in general we have been able to work it out and get results, obviously that’s not always going to happen but as I said it’s a game of two teams trying to get the better of the other and sometimes it’s just not straightforward.

Don’t say that they’ll want him back come January.

I’m actually more concerned about Finnigan being recalled. He’s the only midfielder scoring goals at the minute. And he is getting better game by game for me. And my football app gave him an 8.4 rating yesterday

At half time I honestly thought here comes another home defeat but fair play Sadler changed it and we were miles better than Bromley in that second half. I certainly never saw or expected us to turn it around but we did. It’s not doing my blood pressure much good playing like that for the first half of a game but once we got level there only looked one winner. It was very noticeable how the crowd reacted as soon as we got on level terms, not sure if it’s my imagination but as the atmosphere improved it seemed to lift the team.

I don’t think we can talk about our best midfield, or even team, as it depends who we are playing against. We supporters tend to think of players playing well or badly without seeing how the tactics kick in. Sadler often talks of small adjustments at half-time, which then lead to big differences. Lakin has been great in some matches but not yesterday. Clarke has most impact as a sub; when he has started, he has been less effective.

In terms of the squad, I do feel that, except up front and possibly Flint, we have cover so that the subs, or “finishers” all offer something. To have the capacity to bring on players such as Comley, Clarke and Barrett says a lot about the squad depth.

Tad unfair that, he’s a different type of player to Lowe. Lowe benefited from Matts early season form, Kanu is doing a lot of the heavy lifting on his own.

He’s a brilliant goal scorer, there’s little in it.
