It always has been, hasn’t it?
Yes but only ever played on the odd occasion.
Needs to be played every game.
A few years ago I remember ‘Yellow Ribbon’ was played and it went down like a lead balloon.
Maybe we were all fed up that day. ![]()
Edit: If I recall correctly it was Money’s second season after January. Would explain a lot!
It was last season.
Yes, I totally agree and said the same to my son.
Think my mind blanked most of last season
Does anyone know the origins of Yellow Ribbon being used as a Walsall song? Arsenal apparently sing it too, online search suggests they sang it in the 70s and 80s during cup games but I’ve never heard them sing it in modern times at cup finals etc. Did we nick it from them or vice versa?
I know it was sung at OT in 1975, that’s my earliest knowledge of it as a Saddlers song, but others who are older might have earlier recollections.
How about Heather Small, Proud.
The song itself is more than 100 years old (trad arr as they usually say in song books - and with a few versions of the lyrics over the years). It was adopted by the US cavalry and a few other of their military units, and was then the title for a 1949 John Wayne western that also used it as the main film theme.
It appears Arsenal adopted it because of their yellow “away” kit that was apparently worn for the first time in the 1950 FA Cup Final which would link up to it being known from the film, although it fell out of favour until the 1970s when they had a few more Wembley appearances wearing yellow.
What is played at the Poundland is the 1958 Mitch Miller recording (which is a cover to the film version). I also recall hearing it as sung by fans at Walsall games in the 70s but not sure if we were copying Arsenal fans from that decade or if we adopted it independently or earlier (what was our association with yellow???)
Wasn’t our away kit yellow?
Arsenal have been nicking stuff from us since the town centre cannon.
